The UK’s official list of Covid-19 symptoms has been expanded to include nine new signs of illness.

The extension of the symptoms list to include ailments such as sore throat, fatigue and headache could help to reduce infections, one expert said.

It comes days after the government ended the offer of free universal Covid-19 tests, and at a time when Covid infection levels have hit a record high in the UK, with almost 5 million people estimated to be infected.

The new symptoms, in addition to a fever, a new and persistent cough and a loss or change in taste or smell, are:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Feeling tired or exhausted.
  • An aching body.
  • A headache.
  • A sore throat.
  • A blocked or runny nose.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Feeling sick or being sick.
A note on the nhs.uk website adds: “The symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses, such as colds and flu.”

I can’t ‘like’ that with a thumbs up with the loss of free testing coming at a time when the test is the only way of knowing, since that list of symptoms matches so many things, and now many will not have access to these!! (@everydayupsanddowns how do get the other options like faces Mike)

On an ipad just hold your finger a little longer on the ‘like button’ until the pop-up menu appears… so ‘touch’ rather than ‘tap’

But not too long, or it will try to open it in a new browser window or split screen (which I find not very useful and actually quite annoying and hard to get rid of!)

Thanks Mike. Sorry to interrupt your thread @Northerner

I still have a few LFTs left, and have had a cold over the last week or two - and have been checking and been LFT negative three times when I was about to mix with vulnerable or elderly peeps.

But I know so many people who had cold-like non-specific symptoms (or next to no symtoms at all) and when LFTs were freely available tested negativenegativenegativenegativePOSITIVE that it becomes really hard to know whether you should use one of your last few LFTs to recheck the same ‘cold’ :(

That list of symptoms could apply to lots of other viral illnesses. When will folk realise that Covid is nothing special as a virus. All are classic symptoms of Yellow Fever, for example. And measles, come to think.

Next news will undoubtedly be that it can trigger Type 1 diabetes, like many other viruses. We all know it can produce PVFS - Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, but called Long Covid. EB virus, the cause of glandular fever, is notorious for causing PVFS.

My main objection to this is that because the symptoms are so non specific, even more people will erroneously think they’ve got Covid when it could be one of the routine winter and early spring viruses that do the rounds. Now that Covid tests aren’t free in England, we could have a folk self isolating without any good reason, apart from stopping in till they feel better.

I think I have more chance of catching covid then yellow fever.
Then again, I've been vaccinated for both, so who knows.
(oh, and vaccinated for measles)
And possibly the days of "manning up" and spreading any virus around the office have been suspended for a while, which may not be a bad thing overall?

If you want a complete list of viruses that can produce such symptoms, i will do it, but it might cover a full page of this thread. I used Yellow fever as as an example of the rare, and measles and example of the mundane.

I just think it is pointless to keep releasing potential symptoms to the general public as symptoms of Covid. Looking at them, they are just potential symptoms of any virus infection, but portrayed as unique to Covid. They can also be symptoms of flu, which has rather been forgotten in the Covid lockdowns and infection control such as masks. It's still out there, waiting for an opportunity to multiply.

Nobody's claiming these are unique to Covid, are they? Or even that useful if you want to know if you have Covid but don't want to (or can't) test.

I think it's more of a correction: if you're going around coughing on coworkers because you don't have the specific symptoms of 2020's variant, stop doing that and (if your employer lets you) work from home or stay off sick.

And it's basically free for the government because they're not paying for testing or improving sick pay. So why not do it?

Onme scientist pointed out that, with the prevalence of Covid in the population currently, if you do have a bunch of these symptoms it's likely to be Covid.
