CLEVELAND, Ohio -- University Hospitals Case Medical Center is looking for patients with early-stage Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to participate in a clinical trial testing an insulin nasal spray to see if it can help improve symptoms.

The trial, called the Study of Nasal Insulin in the Fight against Forgetfulness (SNIFF), is a Phase 3 study enrolling about 240 patients at 30 sites nationwide. UH Case hopes to enroll 10 patients, said Dr. Alan Lerner, director of UH's Center for Brain Health and Memory and the principal investigator of the local site.

"One of the theories about Alzheimer's is that it's a 'type 3 diabetes,' he said, in that the brain of an Alzheimer's patient is not able to use sugar efficiently. "There is also evidence linking insulin to memory."
