I am having a PetCt scan on Tuesday next week (treatment and scans are still taking place in Sussex). I know what it entails. They use radiated glucose to highlight rather than the usual contrast. My glucose level should be between 4-8 max 10 or they cancel it. The appointment is for 11 and I’m told to take my Metforminx4 at six in the evening when I stop eating.

I had a dummy run and even reducing carbs the day before could only get a reading of 8.1... fast from 8 in the evening till 9 in the morning. I have a feeling that the longer the fast the higher the glucose levels because something is trying to level up.

Anyone else had this scan?

Sorry I don't have experience of the scan but yes it is likely Dawn Phenomenon which is causing your liver to dump glucose into your blood stream to help you get going for the day and causing your raised levels. Sometimes a low carb snack as soon as you get up will help to prevent it without raising your BG levels but if you are not allowed to eat anything before the scan then how about a good brisk walk before you go to the hospital to bring levels down a bit?

Unfortunately you are not allowed to have strenuous exercise in the 24 hrs leading up to it. It’s a bit of a pain.

Based on nothing at all, I would have thought if you were attending with an 8.1, they would likely do the scan, for the sake of 0.1.

Do you have any particular dietary requirements in the day or days leading up to the scan? If not, it might be worth trying to go low carb, or if you already eat that way already, maybe even trim the carbs back a bit further for the days leading up to the scan. Obviously, it would make sense to test every morning to see what, if any, impact that would have on your morning numbers, around the time of your scan.

In saying that, I am assuming your Metformin is the only medication you take for your diabetes. If you take other medications, that drive your blood glucose down, you would have the check out the impact of changing your diet a bit.

A brisk walk is not what I would consider strenuous exercise. You could ring them and ask if a walk is ok or what else they suggest to bring your levels down.

So have a Nil carb dinner the day before?
