Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was watching a programme about losing weight and they mentioned about diabetes and amputation and eyesight also 10 years of your life.I am type 2 diagnosed 5 years ago my age is 71 my tablets metaformin i a day Hba/1c 48 gone to 53 in lockdown.
Does this mean nothing down for me I’m going to pop my clogs soon?

Well, we're all a bit greedy for life now, we were only supposed to get three score and ten, everything else is a bonus. Back in the day and not so far back I'd have been considered ancient at 67, my own gran popped off just before her 60th birthday and was considered old. Some of us are popping our clogs sooner rather than later due to being stupid and rats is all I can say to that!

Hi @David Forfar. If somebody making a TV programme leaves people like you wondering about their life expectancy they ought to be locked up. Chances are that you will pop your clogs sometime in the next 30 years if you count that as soon and the chances are that when you do, diabetes won't be a big contributor to the event. In the meantime, a bit of work on your diet might be in order just to get back to an HbA1c of 48, or a bit lower, on the basis that your diabetes will be less of an inconvenience during whatever time you have left. 😉

That is funny. :D TV programmes always affect me, I take everything in and believe it. I'm now wanting to do the latest Michael Mosley after watching him last night.

I think it’s worth taking all these predictions of doom with a pinch of salt, but it is also worth bearing them in mind as to the seriousness of the potential consequences of diabetes.

Diabetes is such a peculiar condition because the day to day management is often mundane, and a few errant readings here or there will almost certainly make no long-term difference (yay ice cream!)

but...

The potential long term, or even medium term consequences of regularly errant BG levels can be devastating.

But these mostly don’t manifest immediately, they are an accumulation of weeks, and months and years of glucose variation.

So we end up pouring all this effort in to making the right decisions, and keeping BG in target as much as we can so that nothing happens... So that things that we are potentially at increased risk of don‘t occur.

Hard to tell when something that isn’t certain to happen isn't happening because of what you are doing, or just isn’t happening eh?

But the most important thing, I think, is to keep going. Not to lose hope, and certainly not to feel that all this stuff will happen anyway, so what’s the point.

We may have a few dodgy cards in our hand, but that doesn’t mean we can’t play the hand well, and still come out winning 🙂

Hell's bells - I have always known ever since I was diagnosed that Charcot foot is a complication of diabetes however as far as I know, I have never ever in my life so far (and I'm only 70 and only had T1 for 48 years so far) physically met anyone in person who has it. Despite being an internet Diabetes forum dinosaur by now - I've only been acquainted online with two people who have.

If you want to spend your time depressing yourself by dwelling on things that could happen, feel free to do so but personally I choose not to waste my time and effort on doing that, when I could be doing things I want to do!
