Hi and welcome.

There is so much information (and misinformation) available.
There is much info on Diabetes UK website and some excellent info listed on part of this site.

You haven't said whether you are medication - oral or insulin - controlled or perhaps diet and exercise alone. Whatever, there are basic "don't eats" and often not mentioned enough is portion size.

If you are really struggling, rattle your GP's cage as you are entitled to a minimum care level.

Forum members are not Doctors but all are diabetic or have close family with diabetes hence having real experience of the associated problems

hi CMC i was dignosed 2 weeks bk now and already seems like im doing all the hard work regarding chasing up my nurse,gp , they said i would be referred to a dietician 2 week ago and im still waiting for that to happen my retina tests i had to ask about , seems if i dont ask i would not know a thing im a sitting duck , most of the stuff i know is off the internet or reading through the relevent posts on here .I even was told i would have to pay for my machine that takes my bloods then i got told i did'nt none of them seem to know what to tell me its so annoying there the professionals (or supposed to be)

welcome to DS 🙂

It's very hard to say what each individual can/can't eat. Diabetes is a very individual thing and one food might affect me in one way and you in a totally different way.
What alot of people with type 2 find is that reducing the amount of carbohydrate in their diet helps to control their blood sugar levels. This includes both sugary and starchy carbs (including bread, potatos, pasta). This is however opposite to the official advice which says eat lots of carbs.

Really it's up to each individual to find what works for them, this is your condition and you take responsibility for it. You are doing the right things by reading what you can and joining this site.

Have you got a meter so you can tets your blood sugar levels? If not then get onto your GP/nurse and see if they will give you one.

Hi CMC

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in December. Really scary, so many questions and yet three months on now, I'm starting to get to grips with it. As the others have said what works for some doesn't necessarily work for others. I cut cakes, biscuits chocolates and food like sausage rolls (which I eat occasionally, sausage rolls that is, although I haven't touched one since December!) I haven't gone on any specific diet and I eat bread, pasta & rice and I have cut done on my junk food intake. I eat more fruit and vegetables, roughly 5-6 portions per day considering that before I was diagnosed, I hardly touched fruit!😱 I also walk about 35 minutes per day about 5 days per week and as a result I've lost a stone and a half. I'm a lot more hopeful about the future and I'm hoping that when i have my HbA1C test next month, it'll be under 7.

Anyway all I can say is look at youyr diet, see what stuff you were eating was not healthy and cut it out or make it a very occasional treat, I mean I still have fish and chips now and again although it has been about a month now!😱 Good luck
