Sorry silly Q. Reading on forum where people were firstly diagnosed at Type 2 when in fact they were Type 3c and diagnosed much later.

How do they differ? I was recently diagnosed with 129 and if I had high levels for long time that it caused long term damage so Type 2 could be Type 3c in future?

Sorry I know I might have understood the different of Type 3c so thought I would ask here. I am probably overthinking too

3c when the Diabetes is caused by specific damage, disease of the pancreas when the ability to produce insulin is compromised https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about-diabetes/other-types-of-diabetes/type3c-diabetes
Type 2 is often when the pancreas produces too much insulin and it cannot be used effectively due to insulin resistance.

No question is silly @Zaraah 🙂 Sometimes adults are assumed to be Type 2 when they’re actually Type 3c or Type 1. Here’s some information about Type 3c:

Thanks @Leadinglights and @Inka I found this online and not sure if I was reading right so that is why I was thinking high levels for long time causes long term damage like Type 3c

Not really @Zaraah High blood glucose levels cause damage to eyes, kidneys, blood vessels, etc - for everyone with diabetes, which is why we try to control it.

Type 3c is caused by damage or surgery to the pancreas, eg surgery to remove all or part of the pancreas, pancreatitis, etc.

Basically, ignore the numbers of the types. They’re not a progression, they’re 3 different conditions.

Type 1 is auto-immune, where the body attacks its own beta cells; Type 2 is connected to insulin resistance; Type 3c is from pancreatitis, other damage to the pancreas or surgery.

Are you thinking that when Type 2 has gone untreated or poorly managed for a long time and the beta cells start to burn themselves out, then that would be damage to the pancreas and you are thinking that could then be considered Type 3c. If so, then NO. The Type 2 diagnosis would still stand. The cause of Type 2 is metabolic and yes if it progresses those beta cells can die off but that is not the original cause of the diabetes. It was originally and remains metabolic (Type 2) and generally in these circumstances very large doses of insulin are needed by the patient to overcome the insulin resistance.... hence Type 2 because they have high insulin resistance.
Type 3c is when it is the damage to the pancreas which causes the diabetes in the first place.

Yes I can understand why you might think that @Zaraah, but my understanding is the same as others - that in T3c it is the surgery (or pancreatitis) that causes the diabetes initially

Hi @Zarrah! One not mentioned is Type 1.5 (LADA) which is virtually identical to Type 1 and treated the same way. It just comes on slower than Type I and on average later in life. Neither Type 1, 1.5 or 3c are in any way lifestyle related. c|omplications are brought on by raised BGs regardless of Type although the smoother the average the better. I lost my leg as a consequence of over 50 years of Type I and an incompetent vascular surgeon! I have though met amputees who have lost limbs after 10 years of poorly controlled Type 2.

Thanks everyone for the replies. For some reason I did not get notifications

In a nutshell yes my brain overthinking and whether my type 2 as HbA1C was so high whether it then manifests into Type 3C because so much damage caused with high levels.

Thank you everyone for clarifying that is not the case and sorry for the silly question

Your question wasn't silly, @Zaraah, it's way more sensible than the medical naming in terms of letters and numbers that tell the uninitiated nothing useful.

Only Gestational Diabetes gives a clue as to what is the origin of that diagnosis. The rest are just confusing!
