Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, after reading responses I got to my post after just joining the forums advice is that I should be testing blood sugar levels. I have done this when I had gestational diabetes. I currently take Alogliptin & was told by the nurse that I wouldn’t need to test. After poking around on the internet I read that NHS won’t give testing kits on prescription unless their is a genuine reason. Has anyone asked their GP for a testing kit & what was the response? My next review is in 2 weeks & I will talk to my nurse about it.

It is common place for GP's to not advise testing for type 2's & come up with all sorts of reasons that don't make sense at all. If you are on hypo inducing drugs, you should demand a test kit from your GP. My GP surgery are positive about Type 2's testing, but can only prescribe meters & strips to patients on meds (inc. Metformin only). As I am diet controlled only (& exercise, apparently🙄) I wasn't prescribed a meter, but my DSN advised me to buy one, which I did. Without testing, there is no way I would've known what foods affect me & which one's don't, and I wouldn't have been able to get my HbA1c back into non diabetic levels.

@Maria48, as @mikeyB suggested on your other thread, as you are on a medication that could potentially cause low blood sugars then you need to be able to test prior to driving to ensure you are safe to do so, so the GP/nurse should definitely prescribe you with some strips 🙂 Not prescribing to Type 2s is a penny-pinching, short term saving that may have long-term consequences if poorer control is the result :(
