Type 2
just a quick hello. i was diagnosed in 2007 at 26yrs of age. unsure if type 1 or 2 as they said test was too expensive!
so i take it its type 2, as managed with tablets. they said to me as i was so young, likely i would end up on insulin later.

joined here looking for support, and to say hi to everyone who is in same boat as me.

Hi wend5000
Welcome to the forum! I can't believe what your doctor said.....😡 If I were you, I'd change the doctor and demand proper diagnosis asap.

What sort of med are you on? Metformin, I suppose? Are you checking your sugar level?

Soon people more knowledgeable than me will arrive and give you advice.🙂

Hi wend. Welcome.

Until they arrive, I'll just second kay's comments about the doctor. It does make you wonder how they sleep at night sometimes.

You'll learn all you need to know and more here.

Hi Wend, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm beginning to lose count lately at how many people are joining with such shocking diagnosis tales! How can they give you appropriate treatment if they haven't confirmed the details of your diagnosis? What are your levels like, and your HbA1c? Do you test?

Hopefully, you will get a lot more support here than you appear to be getting from those supposedly 'qualified' to do the job. I imagine that the 'expensive tests' are the C-peptide and GAD antibody tests which can determine if you are producing any insulin (which seems likely, given that you are not injecting insulin) and if the diabetes is due to an attack on your immune system (which would suggest Type 1).

Glad you could join us, will look forward to hearing more from you! 🙂

hi, and thatnks. x

My initial HbA1c was 11.9 and has varied from 6.6 to 9.3.

i am on metformin 500mg tds. my current HbA1c is 7.6.

i pressume i am type 2 as i have managed on my tablets for 3 years, but know i will end up on insulin soon as hoping to get pregnanat soon.....depending on what the preconception clinic says.

Yes, it does look like the metformin is working for you, so it seems most likely that you are Type 2, especially given the time since your diagnosis. Don't be afraid of insulin, I've been on it since I was diagnosed and the hardest bit really is working out how much to inject, not the injections themselves. Oters may correct me, but whilst you may need insulin when pregnant it's not necessarily permanent, so you may go back to just needing tablets.

hi wendy ...its incredible how badly people are being dx ...too expensive to test ..unbelievable !!! good luck in the meantime and id be back banging on GP door for a proper dx as all the types are treated so differently ...good luck xx

Hi from a fellow unknown!
I was diagnosed in Jan as diabetic and told I needed to go on insulin in March. Finally managed to start injecting 2 weeks ago! Also on pioglitazone.
When I explained to my new diabetic nurse that I wanted to know what I was, she said it didn't matter as the treatment is the same!
If u ever want to moan coz we're odd, I'm here to join in!!🙂
