Type 2
Hi
I was diagnosed in August 2020 and was told to try and control it by diet. In November the reading and gone from 53 to 65mmol. My fasting reading this morning was 9.8. I thought my diet had been really good this week. Had blood test this morning so awaiting the new results. I am finding it all very difficult and confusing.

Hello @kaz3840 welcome to the forum.
I am sorry to hear this. What advice were you given regarding changes to diet
And if you could give us an idea of a typical days meals and snacks it will help us give you some tips you could try

Cutting out/down crisps, cake and sweets. Now have become addicted to Oranges which I believe are high in sugars!

I must learn to type faster lol

Porridge for breakfast without sugar
Soup and yoghurt for lunch
Salmon, asparagus and vegetable rice for dinner

Yes though oranges are healthy it’s the fructose (a fruit sugar) in them that we often can’t handle too well

My thoughts are they sure you are a Type 2?
Yes I was wondering that too .

Your dinner sounds fine to me .
Porridge can be a problem fir some of us.

Do you know how to test to see how the various carbohydrates affect you as we are all different in this respect .
To do this we test just before eating then two hours after the first bite, it’s the difference between the two that’s important, if you levels are no more than 3 mmol higher 2 hrs later (post prandial) then that meal was fine for you. Don’t worry if your starting level (pre prandial) was high
Ie if it was 10.5 making your post prandial 13.5 as it still means that meal was ok ,in time you pre levels will go down .

As to @grovesy post. their are many types of diabetes, most of which Gp’s and practice nurses know little if anything about.
One of which is what I Have, LADA latent auto immune diabetes in adults, it is like a slow onset (in my case very slow indeed) T1 it often responds well ( mine did fir a very long time ) to T2 treatments etc but in time these may not work as well . It is often mis diagnosed as T2 .
Their are tests to find this out . Try not o worry about this as no type of diabetes is worse than another , it’s just the way it may need to be treated that’s important.

For the time being it may mean you need to tweak your diet a bit more , this is where your meter and keeping a food diary will be of great help to you.

I reached over 264lb in weight having carbs for breakfast for 20 months.
Not wanting to seem evangelical about eating a low carb diet, but - just saying....

Hi Kaz3840, welcome to the forum!

You're not alone in finding things difficult and confusing as there's lots of new info to take in. You got some great advice above re testing the impact that certain foods have on you so it's worth testing and tracking what you eat and the impact it has 2 hours later for a little while so you get an understanding of what's going on.

It can take a little while to get used to everything so don't be hard on yourself if there are minor blips, we're here to support you and help get you back on track.
