Hi I got home from hospital yesterday after being diagnosed type 2. I am so overwhelmed right now and have had so much contradicting info!! Has any body used slimming world to lose weight whilst type 2? I’ve been doing sw before my diagnosis and lost 2 stone but now I have been told I should stop and go on the plan with the shakes and stuff which I really don’t want to do as that isn’t teaching me how to eat healthy long term. I’ve read that sw have partnered up with diabetes uk and it’s recommended but that’s not the info I have been given by anybody? I’m really overwhelmed and confused. I need to talk to other people who have gone through this❤️

Hi - sorry you've had to join us but welcome. This link should answer your questions about Diabetes UK's link-up with Slimming World:-

I haven't needed to go on any weight loss programmes myself but there are members who have and I'm sure they'll respond to your post.

I replied in your other thread.

Hi @Jennie2210 and welcome to the forum.

To add to Martin's post, this one here explains more about the 'shakes and soups' diet:

As it mentions there, it's 'for up to 12 weeks and to kick-start weight loss', so you're right in saying it doesn't teach you the long-term solutions - that comes after with introduction of healthy foods to maintain that weight-loss and hopefully improved readings. You'll soon see that different people take different approaches - some go low carb, others make changes to their diet and lifestyle and also use appropriate medication, others might go for something completely different. It's all really overwhelming at first, but take it slow, read around on the forum (there is also good literature out there that Users have shared or you might find our Learning Zone useful) and find an option that will work for you. And any questions or worries - feel free to share them, someone here will always have an answer.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you are feeling overwhelmed. I was too when diagnosed a few weeks ago. Being on the forum has helped me a lot.

The Oviva programme, which seems to be the one used by the NHS, says one is monitored for 12 months. 12 weeks on shakes and soups, followed by 6 weeks of transition, and further monitoring the rest of the time and that, if values go up, they'd put you back temporarily on the shakes and soups. I guess how much one learns for after the shakes will depend on how good your coach is. I haven't done the programme yet - just got the email and information about it recently, so I hope to start soon - so I'm just saying what they say.

Still, the answer above is great. Finding what works for you is very important. There is a lot of information, which I found incredibly overwhelming at the start. I spent hours reading posts and articles, and watching videos. My advice, as a newbie myself, is to take a change at a time, and the reading little by little as well. Start by understanding what diabetes is and what it does to your body. Decide on the exercise you can stick to, or something you can do to get you going. Understanding will help you make the choices that work for you. Asking questions here will help you feel less lonely, as everybody here is on the same boat and I've found it a very welcoming community. Wishing you the best of luck!
