Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Good afternoon all!!

I write this with a very heavy heart atm. A couple of weeks ago I found out I was pregnant but unfortunately due to my diabetes and my hba1c being 100 I had a miscarriage . So as you can imagine it’s been a very upsetting and stressful experience.
I have be going to regular appointments at the diabetic clinic and I’m now on liquid metformin and gliclazide. My first blood glucose reading at the hospital was 24 it has now come down to 10 and under. Obviously a lot better but still not perfect. I also have a underactive thyroid that is not under control at the moment and have read that this can affect your blood glucose levels. And also the stress of everything that’s just happened. I’m trying to give my self a break and have made some changes in my diet but I still don’t think it’s good enough.
Has anyone tried the Apple cider vinegar and does it work?
I’m currently taking 2x 500ml =2x5ml spoonfuls of metformin and also 2x gliclazide per day.
Please help

Welcome to the forum
This must have been a shock and very distressing for you but remember miscarriages can happen to anyone and sometimes they happen for a good reason. But that does not mean to say you cannot have a successful pregnancy in the future. But the important thing for now is to try to get your blood glucose well controlled and your thyroid stabilised and the medication you have been given should help with that but there will be things that you can do to help.
It is often better to reduce your blood glucose from such a high level gradually to avoid issues with your eyes and nerves.
Many people find a low carbohydrate approach is successful and this link may help you with some ideas of a way forward. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/.
Can you clarify if you were Type 2 already or only discovered as a result of the pregnancy.
If once you have improved your HbA1C and are planning another pregnancy then there should be support in giving you the best preparation in advance on trying again.
You may feel your age is against you but my daughter had a successful pregnancy at age 43 after 2 precious miscarriages so if that is what you want then there is no reason why not but to give yourself the best chance then you need to sort out your diabetes and thyroid issues.

Hi Joeylucas82, welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage, I can only imagine how difficult things have been lately. It's easier said than done but it's really important to give yourself a break as you've been through a lot.

Getting your health together can be challenging so do try and get as much support as possible. Have a chat with your GP to see what support is available to help manage your diabetes, local support groups and maybe therapy so that you have a neutral space to offload things to.

I find it easier to start with a list of healthy foods I like and build meal plans out of that and slowly add in more of a variety as you discover more. We've got a great new section on remission which may help with some ideas on what others' have found useful.

Please feel free to use this site a source of support. Ask as many questions as you like, note down your journey, post your meals and ask for ideas... Whatever it is, where here by your side and happy to help.

Apple cider vinegar has some benefits but I'm not sure weight loss is one of them. If it was, there would be thousands of people guzzling gallons of it.

Due mainly to advice and help from this forum, I've been following a low carb diet and the weight is falling off (5 and a half stone so far). This is without even trying. Yes, I've also been calorie counting and cutting out general crappy and processed foods but I've not been even a little bit hungry since going low carb and this is coming from a certified food monster!

Give yourself time to grieve your miscarriage and take stock of your diabetes and then make a plan of action. Trust me, you will feel so much better and in control. Not to mention all the health benefits that come along as a bonus.

Take care
xx
