Type 2
Hi, my husband is type 2 and we have just bought a meter to start testing him. I know you do it first thing in the morning and 2hrs after food but do you also do it before food? So this morning it was 8.2 before he ate and 10.8 2 hrs after. Do I know test him before he eats dinner and then 2 hours after it just after? Thanks

Yes, test before & 2 hrs after food. This will show you how the food has affected you. You are looking for no more than 3mmol/l difference.

Ok great thank you. So we tested at before lunch and it was 8.2 and two hours laster it was 10.8. Then before dinner it was 9.1 and we are yet to test after. Does that sound ok? He isn't on any medication yet as he doesn't go to see the doc and nurse till the end of September

The rise in levels look quite reasonable to me, but it depends on what he was eating. If there was very little carbohydrate in the meal (e.g. potatoes, rice etc) then you wouldn't expect much if a rise anyway.

When I was diagnosed, I was given certain ranges to aim for...

1) 4-7mmol/L before meals
2) 7-9mmol/L after meals
3) Avoid >10mmol/L (hyper)
4) Avoid <4mmol/L (hypo)

These days, with reasonable control (still off meds), I'm not happy with anything >7. But it takes a little time to get things on an even keel, so don't worry about the higher levels just yet. I was on meds after diagnosis and they helped me whilst I sorted my new diet and exercise regime out.

Andy🙂

Thanks Andy that helps. He's made some changes to his diet but it's very early days so the meals yesterday did involved some carbs, like wraps in the evening meal and a bread roll at lunch plus he had a drink in the evening. Small changes hopefully will make it easier to stick to

This testing.
Does it involve pricking or cutting the skin to obtain blood twice a day.
Do the wounds heal easily?
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I am confused about testing.

It's a finger pricking test. You use a lancet to prick your finger & gently squeeze to draw blood. This drop goes on the test strip in your meter.

Definitely finger pricking only. Just to add that it shouldn't hurt either! I did a test on my wife the other day and she wasn't looking forward to it, but after said "that didn't hurt".

Andy 🙂

Hi. Not stupid at all. It's a tiny lancet when used with a lancing devise you don't see the lancet needle once it's in the device. You hardly feel the finger prick and it's not painful, jabbing yourself with a sewing needle is far more painful.
TBH it's the only way us diabetics can learn how food affects us, which is rather important in gaining control

Another tip is to use the sides of your fingers rather than the pads, otherwise the pads can get a bit sore after a time.

Hello there

You have a plan and that's half the battle. Testing and making small incremental dietary changes sounds like an excellent approach. After all....you need to develop a strategy you can stick to. There are loads of recipes and tips on the forum and some quite experimental cooks. Marky Parrott comes up with some good stuff (but to be fair he also comes up with some total bin fodder). Happy to have you on board my lovely. If you want to know anything, ask away.

Bin fodder?😱 All my recipes are tried & tested on my chickens before human consumption.:D

I rest my case. 😛

Oh yes, forgot about the pancake.😳

Is that what it waso_O

You are like our own wee test kitchen chef Mark. Keep up the experiments. All offerings considered

Well, I've got a Stollen to work on. I've found a recipe online but not convinced by it. So experimenting l will be.🙂

Oh yes please. Very interested in how that goes. Will be the season soon.......
