Type 2
Hello all,
I'm newbie (hellloooo!) and was just wondering if anyone has experienced hypos with type 2/metformin ? Thought after two years I understood T2 but seems not ! 😱

Hi Pink Blossom, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you able to test when you experience the hypos, and if so, what levels are you at? It is possible to have hypos when you are Type 2 on metformin, but it is rare. When do you experience them? is it soon after eating, or when you haven't eaten for a few hours? Some people suffer from what is called 'reactive hypoglycaemia', where the pancreas overproduces insulin in response to a swift rise in blood glucose levels after eating - this excess of insulin then drops levels low.

Hi pink and a warm welcome to the forum, sorry I've no experience while I'm on met I dont suffer hypos

Hi Northerner,
Thanks for the welcome.
My levels dropped before Christmas (dropped for me anyway), at times down to 3.6, although not frequent. I put it down to a change in diet as I was diagnosed with gallstones so really cut down on fatty things big time.
My metformin was lowered from x4 to x3 tablets per day (500mg each) and all was going well, with the exception of some background retinopathy.

Fast forward to this weekend, and just before lunch I felt dreadful, floppy, ears ringing, shaky etc (havent really experienced this to this extent before). Tested my blood which came up as 3.3 which went up after jelly sweets and a few carbs. I'd had usual breakfast about 3 hrs prior to this happening.
I think it has just scared me more than anything. Going for a blood test on Monday as practice nurse wants to check its not my meds being too high, I think.

Since the weekend, things have been normal and good in terms of blood testing levels so practice nurse thinks it may be a 'blip'.

Hya pink,

Through a link on Twitter, I think !

Agh that fab site twitter it does have its uses hehe x

Well take a good look around the forum you will spot an off the subject part of the forum which most of us use to talk rubbish no only joking but sometimes it's nice to take the emphasis of diabetes at times and have a laugh on here x

Hi Pink Blossom, I am also on metformin and have had readings as low as 1.7, even after a healthy eating day! I do not think the metformin causes the low readings (although someone with more knowledge may prove me wrong), probably more to do with general diet like most things with D
