Hi,

Apologies if I'm repeating a thread!

Can anyone advise me if I am taking Metformin for Type 2 will this affect my application to the DVLA for a C1 HGV licence?

I have found various conflicting pieces of information on the internet so am feeling a bit lost!

Any advice or experience would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi Dan. Welcome.
I found this on the government site
https://www.gov.uk/diabetes-driving.
I don't drive so I'm not much help on the rules for driving but others here are experts.

Welcome.
In theory Metformin does cause you to have hypos.
Why not contact them.

AFAIK - there is no prob whatsoever with Metformin only - UNLESS your doctor or optician has actually stated that you are unfit to drive, or you have hypos which NEED third party assistance.

NEED is quite different from RECEIVE. eg if I go hypo whilst I happen to be standing next to a paramedic, so he assists me by getting my Lucozade for me cos he's nearer my handbag than me - or offers me some glucose gel he has in his bag - this is 'receive' not 'need'.

Hi there. I know this thread is a few months old but I've just been to the docs for a medical to get my HGV provisional. Because I'm on Gliclazide I have to prove that I don't suffer with hypos and manage my bloods well. As such I now have to record my levels for two to four weeks and if all is okay the doc said he would sign off. Apparently Glic is on a list of drugs specifically listed by the DVLA to be monitored.

Many of us know this but there are still some medical staff who are not giving meters to people on Gliclizide.

Hi Sean, you need to check this out because I suspect it's 3 months of blood tests they want to see.

Hi there.

You are so right. I'm really sorry and apologise for putting that timescale on. I'd like to say I have an original excuse for typing that but I really have no idea why I put such a short period. I must've been distracted. (It's easily done) My apologies, it is 3 months.

No problem at all, hope all goes well with your assessment 🙂
