Hi Tricia, welcome to the forum 🙂In answer to your question, grapes are probably not the best fruit to eat and actually in terms of effects on your blood sugar levels chocolate is probably better - especially dark chocolate! Yes, it can be very confusing, unfortunately, and you will find yourself learning a great deal about food and the way your body deals with it.

I would suggest looking in our Useful links thread, in particular I would recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and also seeing if you can get a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which is an excellent introduction.

In terms of diet, what you need to aim for is food which will release its energy into your blood in a stable and steady manner. This isn't always easy to achieve, but one of the most practical approaches is to follow the GL Diet (Glycaemic Load). This will help you identify food that will have the gentlest effect on your blood sugar levels. The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction. It's also a very good idea to follow a testing schedule as described in the links above so you can build up a picture of what foods work best for you and which are best avoided.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - everyone here is very friendly and helpful, and no question is considered 'silly', so fire away! 🙂

15 grapes constitute one Carb Portion on the X-Pert Diabetes Patient course.
Most diabetics report that grapes shoot their bgs up something rotten so try 15 and then test.
The X-Pert Patient course by the way is a good introduction to T2 diabetes, you might enquire about going on it if you have not already been on a educational course.

Welcome to the forum Tricias 🙂

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

I went on that X-Pert course a month after diagnosis (in November, 2009). I found it extremely useful because it gave me the chance to ask loads of questions in a relaxed way rather than having to rely on the GP/consultant who, whilst they are good, simply don't have the time!

It's run by the NHS so may be available in your area too (or perhaps another course like DESMOND ... but I'm not familiar with that).

Andy 🙂

Hi Tricia, welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed a few months ago and it really is confusing isn't it. Take it day by day, ask away on here and you will soon begin to get the hang of it all. It takes time so try and relax and before you know it you will feel much better about it all.🙂

Hi Tricia and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome Tricias

Simplistic answer, but perhaps practical and worth a try - if 15 grapes shoot your blood sugar up too high, try eating fewer, at the end of a meal, perhaps replacing some carbohydrate in the first course. Sometimes, reducing portion size means you can have some of the food you particularly like, rather than having to give up totally.

Hi Tricia,

Welcome to the boards! I've only just been recently diagnosed and am still learning what I can and can't eat! Test lots and keep a diary of the different foods you try!

Good luck

xx
