Hi Everyone

Just reaching out to say hi. I've been a member of Diabetes UK for a few years but didn't know about this forum and here I am 🙂.

I've been type 2 for a couple of years and been on the usual meds Metformin, Gliclazide and Dapagliflozin. I've been low carbing for several months now which has made a huge difference lowering my HbA1C from 63 to 46. I'm trying to reduce it further and put my diabetes into remission. Long weight loss journey ahead.

Glad that you've been able to join us after being a valued member for so long! Look as though you've done an incredible job getting your numbers down so feel free to share your wisdom if you found anything particularly helpful.

Getting into remission is a journey but it seems as though you've got the right formula so just need to be consistent.

Don't have any magic secret other than keeping my carbs really low. I've lost a stone and want to lose more. I started a 800 program called Habitual but I notice my fasting glucose back into the diabetic range from 4.7-5.6. When I looked in the ingredients it has glucose syrup and caramelised sugar syrup. This is a program targeted at diabetics so I was really shocked. I contacted Habitual and they said they need to add it to get the carb content up! Surely that is not good? I stopped it and had a low carb meal instead of two packs and kept calories to 400. Lost another pound this morning and fasting glucose into the 6's.

Most people believe (wrongly) that carbs are required. In fact they are not only a non-essential food category (unlike Protein and Fat) but they are actually turned into glucose as they are digested. This means that so-called 'healthy carbs' are actually bad for Type2 diabetics, as an Blood Glucose meter will show.
 
In my opinion carbs can form a part of a healthy, flexible, and enjoyable diet, both for people living with diabetes and for ‘nonnies’.

In fact it’s almost impossible (and probably not very wise) to attempt to avoid carbohydrate entirely as there are trace amounts in so many foods and notably vegetables - even lettuce!

But as you’ve discovered @Davephuk - it’s about spotting where readily available carbs can be lurking in unsuspecting foods, and also it’s important to work within your individual tolerance to carbohydrate, the needs if your metabolism and to balance with any meds you are taking.

Getting portion control right on the main sources of carbs in the menu is a very popular technique on the forum.
