Hi, my husband has been type 2 diabetic for many years and was told that his pancreas had almost packed up and was put on Lantus and novo rapid.
After recently recovering from a NASTY complicated UTI that lasted 3 months, we have finally got his blood sugars lowered but he still keeps losing weight, does anyone have any similar experience and could it be late onset type 1 instead ? thankyou -Kind regards

Even if he is/was late onset Type 1 Lantus and NovoRapid would be appropriate treatment and should stop his weight loss and help him to put some weight back on assuming he is eating enough. Of course the insulin doses need to be correct to keep his BG levels reasonably in range when he is eating enough food.
What sort of things does he eat in an average day and how are his BG levels now that he is over the UTI?

If you are concerned about continued weight loss then perhaps ask the GP for more investigation.... assuming he is now eating enough to put weight back on or at least stabilize his weight.

So - what actually was the root cause of the UTI - and has that now been completely eliminated from his body?

What are his blood sugars now? On a recent thread you said they were very high - what numbers is he getting now over the course of a day? Is he carb-counting? How often is he testing his blood sugars?

Type 1 does cause weight loss pre-diagnosis but the reason for that is the lack of insulin. On insulin your husband should slowly regain weight if his blood sugar is kept in range.

Sorry to hear your husband is losing weight @Norfolklou - must be very worrying for you both.

How is his appetite and eating? Are the insulins starting to help him keep his BG levels more within range now?

Weight loss can be caused by a number of things as well as diabetes, so it might be wise to book a phone consultation or e-consult to chat things through?

The lady has not been back to the forum since Thursday.

Thankyou we are seeing the GP again tomorrow it’s all very worrying

Since the complicated UTI has finally cleared - blood sugars have been much better - fingers crossed ( the Utis started after a scan with contrast - he has finally got his appetite back and sees the Gp tomorrow-

Good to hear @Norfolklou

Hope tomorrow’s appointment goes well.

That is interesting as my other half had an MRI with contrast and a few days later got a bladder infection.

Thankfully now his UTI has cleared his blood sugars are much better and he is now hungry again - we see GP tomorrow as he is slightly anemic

I’ve since found out he should not have had the dye !! Was your husband very poorly - it’s been sl ost 3 months
No he just panicked as he was peeing something that looked like tomato ketchup, he had had a prostate operation 2 months before so thought something had gone amiss on that front.
The MRI was for a gastric issue, quite ironic really as they then sent for him to have a urology CT with contrast on Sunday. No effects so far touch wood.
