Hi everyone! I was a well controlled type 2 diabetic with a hbac1 of 43. I’m 8 weeks pregnant and have been put on humulin at night time and novorapid with breakfast along with my usual Metaformin. I’m really struggling to find meals with low carbs that help fill me up! Just looking for advice, suggestions and tips!
 
Hi and welcome and many congratulations on your pregnancy.

Afraid I have no experience of pregnancy, but just wonder if your meals need to be low carb when you are on insulin, especially when you are pregnant. I am not sure if pregnancy needs a change of mindset particularly now you have insulin.

That said, I am Type 1 and follow a low carb way of eating because it helps with other health issues and the key for me to prevent hunger on a low carb way of eating is to eat more fat. It has little impact on BG levels (about 40-50% of protein breaks down into glucose in the absence of enough carbs whereas just 10% of fat) and provides slow release energy over many hours rather than carbs which usually release in the first 2 hours after eating. Plus fat is rich, so you don't generally want to eat too much of it.
For me, this means fresh double cream in my morning coffee and full fat Greek natural yoghurt with my berries and seeds and creamy coleslaw on my salad and a big chunk of cheese with my half an apple at lunchtime and veggies like aubergine and mushrooms which soak up lots of olive oil when you cook them and avocado and I eat rather too much peanut butter 🙄
I am not sure how many of these high fat foods are suitable for pregnant women though. Have you spoken to your DSN about it or asked for an appointment with a dietician?
 
Eating either (or both!) protein and fat will still make you feel full and as long as you still eat SOME carb with meals generally, despite the fact your body can convert some of both of those to glucose, it takes it longer to do that thing than when it converts the carbs. So - carbs it can convert 100% of, protein approx 40% of, and fat, approx 10% of.
 
Presumably you have means of testing your blood glucose so you could do some experimenting with the amount of carbs you can have and keep within the blood glucose level you have been advised you need to be at.
Have you been given advice about the amount of carbs you should be having for the insulin you have been prescribed.
Were you having following a low carb regime before.

Congratulations @GEEPF 🙂 Have you had a hospital appointment yet? I’m Type 1 and have been for many years but I was still offered a chat with a dietician when I became pregnant.

You say you’ve only been given Novorapid for breakfast? Is that because you were going high after breakfast? Will it be introduced for other meals? How are your blood sugars at the moment? Are you within the ideal BMI range?

There’s no need to go very low carb when you’re pregnant. You’ll need carbs during the pregnancy and during breastfeeding. The insulin should allow you to eat what you need once you get the hang of adjusting it to keep your blood sugars in range. You’ll receive help and support to do this.

Pregnancy can be extra-stressful with diabetes but it’s also a wonderful time. You’ll get extra care. I’ve had three pregnancies with diabetes. The diabetes makes it harder work, but it’s perfectly do-able.
