Hi foxy88, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. What did they do for you at the hospital - did they put you on any medication? 31 is pretty high (I was 38 and in a pretty bad way at that level), plus what you say about your weight makes me wonder if you might be a slow-onset Type 1. You do not have to be overweight to be diagnosed with Type 2 though, that's just the impression that the media tends to give because about 80% of people are - many are not.

Firstly, try not to worry - diabetes is a condition that can be managed very well and there is no reason why you shouldn't live a full and healthy life with it. Many people find that they feel fitter and healthier than they have in ages once they make the necessary adjustments to get their blood sugar levels under control 🙂

The main thing to bear in mind is that blood sugar levels are raised by carbohydrates - ALL carbs, not just sugary food, but rice, potatoes, bread, pasta etc. Some types of carbohydrate will raise levels quicker than others, so it's best to avoid those that raise them too quickly. It's better to eat meals that will have a slow and steady effect on your levels, and a useful way of planning your meals so that they do this is to follow the principles of GL - Glycaemic Load. The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction to this type of eating and it will allow you the greatest flexibility in your diet. Have a browse of the links in our Useful links thread, in particular Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended by many of our members.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will do our best to answer them for you. There are hundreds of friendly, experienced people here so there will always be someone around who can share similar experiences 🙂

Welcome to the forums foxy88 🙂

I would challenge them to perform a few tests, anti-bodies and c-peptide. Did they say you had ketones when you were taken into A+E?

Yes ketones were at 4,i still have no idea wat that is,they were also present in the urine,i have no idea what to eat and when to eat it,i have cravings and i got a blackout for an hour and was put on a drip
