The number of people under 40 with type 2 diabetes in the UK has risen sharply in the past 20 years, research shows.

In 1991 there were about 150 cases per 100,000 people, but by 2010 it rose to 500, an increase of about 270%.

Research also shows the average age at which people get the disease is falling: the proportion of those under 40 with it has risen from 5% to 12%.

Cardiff University's Prof Craig Currie said it can now be considered common among the relatively young.

Once again the simplistic message given is that it is purely down to people's lifestyle choices and overeating, so hundreds of thousands of people who get T2 despite leading healthy lives will be made to feel guilt and shame :( "If they can pay for the food, they can pay for the treatment" - what a hateful and ignorant comment :( 😡

It's that dreadful MP Phillip Lee again.
He had quite a lot to say last November suggesting that Type2s lived on doughnuts and should pay for medication as it was their lifestyle that caused it. .

He also upset pharmacists when he likened their job to counting smarties.

That kind of ignorance ought to be a criminal offence when you hold a position of power like him :(
