Hi, I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after being on steroids for 2 months.
My question is about testing. I am finding my pre dinner test to be high. It is about 4 hours after I have had my Prednisolone and I am wondering about having my Prednisolone at a different time e.g. with breakfast.
Any thoughts please

Welcome.
Unforunately Steriods tend to increase blood sugars.

I don't know anything about steroids and timing - who told you to take it when you do? Is the leaflet in the paket of any help, as to when to take it for best results?

Hi You should have been told to take the steroids in the morning due to the effect they have on your sleep pattern and yep Pred hits your blood sugars about 4 hours after taking them.

Thanks for your reply. My sleep pattern worked well when taking Prednisolone at lunch time. My morning test is okay but really wondering how long the effect of the Prednisolone in the blood lasts to know when the best time to test is later in the day

I'm with PumperSue on this, I've always been told to take steroids in the morning.

To an extent it depends on why you you are taking steroids - it is often possible to split the dose, mitigating the effect on BG.

I am taking Prednisolone for Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Have started taking it with my breakfast to see what effect this has. Thanks for your reply

I take steroids in the morning too. I was referred to a Diabetic Consultant by my respiratory consultant to manage my steroid induced Diabetes. at the moment I take Gliclazide when I'm on steroids. There's no best time to take steroids and the effect on blood sugars, they will continue to rise until you finish the steroids. I too suffer from insomnia when on steroids usually for the first couple of days.

I will be on steroids for a few years. I have noticed that my pre breakfast test readings are coming down slowly as are my pre dinner readings but that one is still rather high. I am taking gliclazide
