I havent yet seen the diabetic nurse because of covid as the clinic told me

Welcome @Chobemai and congratulations 🙂

Are you on any meds for your diabetes?

Are you taking the special high dose folic acid? (5mg)

Can you not ask as for at least a telephone consultation with the Diabetic Nurse?

Thank you Yes i am on 5mg folic acid started taking it before I was pregnant and also I am on metformin.

I did tht yesterday but i was told she was not available and was given an appointment for the 7th of December 2020. So i am still waiting since then.

I don’t think Metformin can cause hypos but pregnancy can cause low blood sugar even if a woman isn’t diabetic. It can also occasionally cause low blood pressure (and high blood pressure) but that tends to be later on.

Do you test your own blood sugar? What kind of numbers are you getting?

I think @merrymunky has Type 2 and has recently had a baby so she might be able to help (if she has time!)

Yes i do test. My numbers are usually between 8, 7 and the lowest like 4.

They sound good numbers 🙂

As you probably know, the targets are pretty strict for pregnancy, particularly after meals:

Recommended target levels are 5.3 mmol/litre for fasting, and 7.8 mmol/litre 1 hour after meals, or 6.4 mmol/litre for 2 hours after meals.

You asked about ‘good’ carbs in your first post. The above targets for after meals should be your guide. Check out a GI food list. I’m loathe to say which foods are ‘good’ because it will vary depending on the individual. What’s important to know (if you don’t already) is that pregnancy makes hormones that increase insulin resistance. So it could be that your meds will need changing later on. This won’t be your fault - just a natural pregnancy thing.

I’m Type 1 so I’m not sure what care you’ll receive as a pregnant Type 2, but make a list of questions for when you speak to your nurse, and also have your blood sugar results ready and a list of what you’ve been eating so they can see how your body is doing. I saw a dietician in early pregnancy. You could ask about that.

Wow thank you so much for your help i am really greatful, i will do so when i go see the diabetic nurse.

In this day and age, they will start you on insulin during your pregnancy, hopefully before too long to enable you to try and realistically reach those very narrow BG numbers, which you'd be unlikely to easily manage without insulin. However if you want to have a healthy baby then it's better to try and comply with them, and with the help of insulin, this just becomes more manageable - so try not to get upset about it. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum @Chobemai

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and well done for taking the folic acid 🙂

Pregnancy and diabetes can be tricky, but more and more women who live with diabetes are having successful pregnancies and giving birth to healthy bouncing (and normal weight!) babies 🙂

Pregnancy and childbirth are hard on the body though, and especially if you have diabetes throwing a spanner in the works!

This NICE Guidance NG3 will tell you what care you should expect, and outlines the ‘best practice’ based on all available research when reviewed in 2018.

Sorry to hear that your appointments are being delayed by Covid19. Do call the Diabetes UK helpline (number at the top of the page) if you want to chat things through.
