Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello! I'm 36 and I've been diagnosed with type 2 Friday after my hba1c was 61. I've had 3 gestational diabetes pregnancies so kinda got my head around what's to come. But I have to admit I feel deflated, at least while pregnant there was a silver lining and an end. I got my appointment with the nurse Monday and hoping to feel better once a plan/treatment is in place.

I have always tried to eat a low carb diet, in the face of advice from HCPs, and can honestly say I wish that I'd been diagnosed long before I got to a ridiculous weight, almost spherical, and 65 years old.
I feel so much better now, and I have the ideal argument against low fat high carb diets.
The children were brought up with low carb foods on hand, and they grew tall and slender, and very fit and healthy, so it might be an advantage to them as well.
If you already know how to do a low carb diet you are likely to find it easy to return to normal numbers.

Welcome @Ryokochan20 🙂 I’m sure you will feel better after you’ve spoken to the nurse. My advice is to write down any questions you have and keep them and a pen ready so you can jot down anything you need to.

It’s completely understandable why you feel deflated - all the diabetes work but no wonderful reward at the end. But at least it’s been spotted and you can start to control it and stay healthy and well.

Welcome to the forum @Ryokochan20

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but I gather it isn’t all that uncommon for women who have experienced gestational diabetes to later go on to develop T2.

You may already have a great understanding of how to manage your blood glucose levels, but you may find Maggie Davey's letter a helpful starting point that might fill in some differences between gestational and T2 . Alternatively Gretchen Becker’s book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year is often recommended to newcomers here.

I hope your appointment goes well on Monday, I second the suggestion of taking any questions you have as a list - it’s all too easy to forget in the appointment itself once you begin to get quizzed by the nurse!

Let us know how it goes 🙂

Thank you all so much for your replies. My appointment went well, been put on metformin and will be having phone calls to check on how I'm doing and another blood test in 3 months time. Feeling pretty confident about everything. Hope you're all having a good day.

Sounds great @Ryokochan20 🙂
