Had my Diabetic Clinic today and everything was good. Blood pressure fine, cholesterol down, HbA1c good.

But had a bit of a surprise. I have now been re-classified as a Type 1 after nine years😱.

Well when I was in hospital last year a nurse happened to mention I was type 1 and I told her I was diagnosed as type 2. Then when I had a letter from the gastroenterologist with my diagnosis of Diverticular Disease it also mentioned it.

I didn't think much about it at the time, but now my records seem to have been changed to type 1 too. It's a pity nobody thought to inform me though!

Wow Phil 😱 Nine years misdiagnosed :( I think that beats Pattidevans by a year. Do you think it has made a difference over the years to how you have been treated? I can't remember whether you have always been on MDI.

Alan, I've been on insulin for 5 years but only been on MDI for about 18 Months. But since I've been on MDI I have seen big improvements with my BS and HbA1c. Before I went on MDI my BS's were getting higher and higher.

Well, it's good at least that you were put on a regime that worked for you, a shame they didn't test for it right from the start. How were you diagnosed originally? I often wonder what might have been my story if I hadn't been admitted with DKA but had just gone to my GP with symptoms given my age.

How bizarre...

Alan, originally I had gone to the Doctor about an unrelated matter and the Doctor said he wanted to do some blood tests but didn't say why.

About 4 days later I got a call from the surgery saying the Doctor wanted to see me concerning the test results. It was then that I was informed that I was diabetic.

Although for quiet some time before I was diagnosed I had been getting what I now know were symptoms of diabetes, frequent peeing, feeling tired all the time, headaches due to the high BS levels, feeling thirsty all the time and pins and needles in my feet. I was 39 when I was diagnosed by the way.

Pretty much what might have happened to me Phil, as I had had (with hindsight) symptoms for about 2 years prior to diagnosis. I would probably have carried on for longer had I not got a virus that pushed me over the edge, and I hardly ever get ill so that was a bit of a fluke. Good to hear that you have a good Hba1c now 🙂

Crazy. Were you slightly overweight by any chance?? I told my GP I seemed to have developed diabetes (bg 30) and he called me in: his first line was: '******. If you'd been overweight I was going to say you were type 2 and if you'd smelt of ketones I was going to say Type 1. Now I don't know what to do with you......'

No I wasn't overweight, but I think it is the usual assumption that as I was 39 I was automatically classed as type 2.

LOL! I was actually put on insulin within days of diagnosis as the pills were doing nothing and BGs were over the top range of the meter. It just used to greet me cheerily with "HI". It was indeed my age that made them say T2 (I was 57) as I was very slim, but it was worth every minute of the fight to get properly diagnosed, since I've now just had pump approval and should be pumping by July. I'd say to everyone to push for a proper diagnosis. Obviously Phil you're benefiting from being on a proper MDI regime - excellent news about the Hba1c by the way.
