Type 1 since 1987, new to forum, saying hello

I have just joined Diabetes UK and joined this forum so am just saying hello. I have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 27, in 1987, and am now 65. Back in the day I was a member when it was the British Diabetic Association and for a few years was involved in setting up a network for women with diabetes, but I have not been involved in anything with other people with diabetes for many years now. although my health is not terrible and I have had few complications apart from eyesight problems, I am really struggling with managing my diabetes at the moment and feeling very fed up with it. So it seemed like a good time to reconnect with others with diabetes. I am particularly interested in finding out more about best possible ways to use tech to help manage diabetes. I have a Libre Sensor but am permanently annoyed by the fact that the Libre app doesn't include a bolus calculator or link to an app that would do that. I want to try and record more but not be feeding in information twice! I used to have an Accu-Check Aviva Expert meter which I found really helpful - and really like the sensor less than that, though I appreciate the alarm system (sometimes).

Anyway, that's enough for now. Am looking forward to talking to others, especially anyone who has useful advice on tech issues.

Hi @AnnM and welcome to the forum - sorry to hear you've been struggling recently - haven't used a bolus calculator myself but I believe the MySugr app has one - in terms of how it works/compatibility with other devices and whether the free version has it, I don't know I'm afraid - but worth looking into if you think it would help

Hi and welcome from me too.

I am another one who doesn't use a bolus calculator, but it does look like you will need a third party app. I wonder if something like xdrip offers that function and can also pick up your Libre data. I know it isn't ideal using third party apps for your Libre but many people here use them successfully and find them far better than the LibreLink App and I think with some of them you have more alarm functions which can be really useful.

Although it is done time since I used xDrip+, I do not believe it incorporates a carb calculator. It is more of an analysis tool than.a calculator.

Welcome @AnnM 🙂 Sorry - I don’t use a bolus calculator either - apart from my brain! I used one when I first got a pump but only for a few weeks so I could concentrate on my pump not my Maths. Is there a reason why you want to “record more”? Have you got some recurrent issue you’re trying to solve? As the years have gone by, I’ve recorded far less and now don’t bother at all.

Sorry your diabetes is being a pain at the moment. That can be incredibly stressful.

As someone with different ratios for different meals I do find a bolus calculator useful. I too use MySugr. Yes, it can be a bit of a chore entering info there and in LibreLink, but you can record carb amounts/doses in LibreLink say once a day. (Just put a short comment - a single letter will do - in the log at the time of the sensor reading and that turns it into a note that you can edit at any time) And LibreLink will also record doses from Novo pens (Echo Plus and 6 for reusable pens, I’m afraid I have no idea about disposables).

Hi and a big welcome (or a welcome back in some way)! Thank you for sharing a bit of your journey - living with Type 1 since the late 80s is no small feat, and it's completely understandable to feel fed up at times. Diabetes management can feel relentless, even more so when the tech that’s supposed to help adds its own frustrations.
It’s great that you’re using the Libre, though I completely hear your frustration about the lack of an integrated bolus calculator. A seamless system sounds like a dream come true to many - one app to track glucose, carbs, doses, activity, the lot - but the tech still hasn’t quite caught up with the day-to-day realities people face.
As I'm sure you can tell with the responses - you’re definitely not alone in navigating this tech maze, and you’ve come to a great place to share ideas, ask questions, or even just have a good old-fashioned vent.
Looking forward to seeing more of your posts - and thank you again for reconnecting. It really is good to have people here with vast experience that they can share with others.

Diabetes clinic in hospital had me download Diabetes.M app , has helped me ,but I've only been diagnosed 4 months . Does not integrate with Libre 2+ sensor so have to jump back and forward . Before using app was hypo nearly every second morning about 2,3 o'clock.

Hi @AnnM and a very warm welcome from me too 🙂. I have have been using use MySugr for some time now to calculate bolus. I get a free subscription as I have Accu-Chek Instant meter. I now use Libre 2 sensor but as long as you use the meter every now and then you will still get the free subscription; the meter links to the My Sugr app. It's not too much of a faff to calculate bolus on MySugr and then add then record details on Libre app. I find this system works well for me 🙂. Technology has certainly improved from when I was diagnoses over 30 years ago!

Welcome to the forum @AnnM

You are a few years ahead of me, I was diagnosed in 1991, and I had very happy times with the Aviva Expert too 🙂

Abbott/Freestyle used to have the Insulinx as an Expert-a-like. And if I remember right that functionality was built into the first Libre handset (but only if you used it as a BG meter as Libre 1 data weren’t rated for bolus calculation)

MySugr has a bolus calculator, but I don’t think you can get Libre data across into it any more :(
