Further to earlier post, new Specialist is insisting I am Type 2 not 1 - but still to keep on insulin? Now also on tablets for blood pressure from today. Peed off and confused. Why have I been taking 4 injections a day for 3 years and told to continue but not type 1!!

What's the basis for this change of diagnosis Ron? How were you diagnosed originally? As I understand it, the principal indicator for Type 2 is insulin resistance, which would lead to a high dose of injected insulin should the person's pancreas be incapable of producing sufficient of its own. Are you on high doses, and have you always been? Of course, there are also some Type 1s who have insulin resistance too - sometimes referred to as 'double diabetes', so there is rather a grey area surrounding it. I think the only way you can tell for certain is with the C-peptide and GAD antibody tests - have you had these? Or is he basing it purely on age?

Sorry for all the questions!

No North, never been on high doses. Between 5 to 8 Daytime Basal times 3 and 10 for night time Bolus (think thats the right descrption?). First diagnosed with bsg at 28+ and it took a while to get over the usual symptoms.

Doesn't sound right to me then. In fact it sounds like you might be a Type 1.5. Type 2 don't tend to go as high as 28 if they are producing their own insulin as far as I know, unless they also happen to be ill with something else. Not sure I quite understand what injections you are on - what insulins do you use? Basal insulin is the slow acting, like lantus or levemir, and bolus insulin is what you inject to cover your meals, like novorapid.

Some Type 2s do start on insulin, I believe this is true of ukJohn, but I think his doses are relatively high.

Northerner, you are correct, I have been on insulin since the first day I was diagnosed as type 2. My insulin doses are high as follows

Levemir...70 units am 70 units pm ..total 140 units per day
Novorapid 50 units @ breakfast
" 45 units @ lunch
" 50 units @ teatime......... total 145 units per day.

John.

A pal recently got told he is now type two, after 8 years or so I think, he was on two injections a day, but now is on a new wonder drug not on NHS yet, I think he's one of the guinea pigs but it appears to be going extremely well!
