Type 1
Hi, I was diagnosed last April as Type 2 and tried to treat first with diet then drugs but to no avail. Have now been rediagnosed as Type 1 due to consistently high Hba1c' s and am now on multi injections of insulin. All a bit daunting and scary. I know I'll get used to it but my lifelong fear of needles has had to be addressed! Hoping that i get to meet others with positive views about living with diabetes.
Love,
Becky

Hi Becky! Nice to see you back, but sorry to hear to hear of the troubles you have had with your diagnosis and getting the right treatment. Unfortunately, you're not the first person who has come here and related such an experience.

If there is anything you need to know about insulin and being Type 1 then there are lots of experienced people here who can help. What insulin are you on? Have you been taught how to carb count? It would be well worth getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂

A few people here also have needle phobias, so hopefully you will be able to swap notes with them. I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂 And there are lots of positive stories here to keep you motivated!

Welcome to the forums Becky 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome! It seems like a long time coming but hopefully now after years of feeling like rubbish i can start feeling 'normal' again! Am on Lantus and Apidra. I've only just started this week and so am on quite a low dose of both but am going back to hospital on Tues to review the situation. I'm finding the injections sting quite a bit, am hoping this will improve? Also have started carb counting but it feels like I'm taking on more carbs than I should. Thanks for the book recommendation, I will look it up!

Lantus is known for it's stinging, unfortunately. You do get used to it and don't really notice it after a while. I've been using it for over 3 years now and it very rarely seems to sting for me now. Not sure about Apidra, I'm on novorapid.

I was an undiagnosed slow-onset Type 1 so I have some idea how you must have been feeling - once I got started on insulin and got used to my requirements I felt soooo much better, so I hope you will too 🙂

Hi Becky. Welcome as a T1. :D

That book is brilliant. Cant praise it enough.

As Alan said, you do get used to the Lantus. Don't be shocked if it doesn't last the full 24 hours either, but that's something you won't know until you've been using it for a while.

As for Apidra. Don't really know the advantages over humalog/novorapid. I think it has a shorter action, so would be tricky for low GI foods but would be interesting to hear how you find it.🙂

Hi Becky,

My chapie is Type 1. I cannot offer any majorly usefull info but he has lived with it since he was 3 and is now 30.
My big advice no drinking alcohol and eat as much fresh food as possible. As long as you look after yourself diet and exercise its very managable.
Have a look in the thread everybopdy is wonderful and helpful 🙂

Hi Becky, newby also - type 2 - diagnosed 2 weeks ago. The guys are here are fantastic - a font of knowledge. Amanda 🙂

Hi Becky, I'm on Apidra too, I don't find that it stings, where are you injecting? I hope things go well for you. I also have needle phobia but am coping well with injecting after lots of practice. I am seeing a psychologist who is helping me with needle phobias as well as other things and she has recommended hypnotherapy, I will let you know if it helps! I still struggle with blood tests so I will see if I cope with the next one any better

Rob - yes it is faster acting than novorapid, I switched to it because my insulin was lasting too long and I was struggling to exercise without going hypo, I think it is very good for active people or those with fast metabolism like mine (apparently!)
