Not immediately new to diabetes but had it 4 years now (type1).
Anyone else have this horrible disease from East of England, I barely know anyone who has type 1.

Welcome @Reece Sargent 🙂 I’ve had Type 1 almost 30 years. There are people from all over the UK and elsewhere here all happy to give advice and support.

I'm from the middle and had it 49 years.

What's up, why do you find it 'horrible' ?

Hi. I am in the North East and just 2 years in, but here on the forum it really doesn't matter where we are geographically, because we are all here for each other all the time.... which I think may well be better than having someone 5 miles down the road. You can chat or moan or pick people's brains here all the time and because of the wealth of experience amongst the members you get far better guidance than just one or two local people. In fact I put more store on the advice I get here than from my health care professionals because it comes from people who have to live with it day to day and meal to meal and hypo to hypo etc.
I hope you will find the same support and benefit from the forum as I have although I appreciate it is useful to meet up in person with other diabetics occasionally, they can't offer me the level of support and advice I get here.

I found (and many other people have mentioned the same) that educational courses like DAFNE or carb counting courses are great for meeting other Type1s and comparing notes/experiences. You soon realise that whilst we all suffer the same condition, there is a huge amount of variability in the issues we have in managing it.

Hi @Reece Sargent, welcome to the forum.

You've come to the right place, there are plenty of type 1s here on this forum! 🙂

How's your diabetes management been since diagnosis?

Welcome back to the forum @Reece Sargent

I think it was nearly 20 years before I started dipping my toes into the Diabetes Online Community - up until then I’d only bumped into 2 other friends of friends with T1, whose diabetes seemed to behave nothing like mine! At the time the idea of meeting people with just because they had diabetes would have sent me running in the opposite direction. What a horrendous idea!

But once I started comparing notes online, and had all those Ah!! I get that too!! Moments from reading posts and blogs I found comparing notes to be a huge support, and I think I learned more about managing my own diabetes in 2 years than I had in the previous 20!

So rant away - we get it. We know just how fickle, wilful and frustrating diabetes can be to live with.

What have you been finding tough?

Sorry for the late reply! And up and down really, I was diagnosed after waking out of coma from DKA in 2017, Bloods are always up and down, but told I was honeymooning or something. Still new to it all, had to change long acting insulin recently, lots of low Blood sugars aswell :/ Still trying to find that sweet spot with regards to insulin doses, I’m also carb counting.
Thanks for the reply 🙂

I'm in Norfolk, know a few fellow type 1's through pump clinic.
I’ve not bumped into 1 adult my age with the condition (type1). What’s your thoughts on the pump, do they hurt etc, I’m still using the pens. And just thought I’d see see if there are any type 1s around the area I live.

So do you attend the diabetes clinic at your local hospital, or what?

I live in South Norfolk. Pumping for ooh nearly 10 years I reckon. I think I'm a bit older than you at 45 🙂
