Type 1
Just lately i've had 2 people say to me "are you sure you're type 1 diabetic?"

1 = my DSN, when she was querying how often i test - this has now been resolved a few weeks back & when i told her all my symptoms she agreed that i'm type 1 diabetic.

2 = a nurse from a local diabetes centre, who i spoke to today about the possibility of me going on an X-pert course.
Btw, i've decided i may not go on this course as i believe it's mainly for type 2.

My Diabetes type 1 symptoms
1991 - gestational diabetes diagnosed during my 2nd pregnancy
1992 - it was in this year a year after my pregnancy that i was drinking huge amounts of liquid / had a dr out twice to see me who advised me to drink sugary liquids / third day after seeing the dr i was going into a diabetic coma & came round in hospital with an extremely high bs, blurry eyesight etc / have ever since been on 4 injections per day.
I was aged 31 in 1992.

The X-pert course is definitely for T2.

You need a carb-counting course!

The 'Expert Patient' course however is sposed to be for anyone with any long-term condition, but when you read a synopsis of what they cover eg pain management, coping with exercise when you have reduced mobility, breathing difficulties and the like - there doesn't seem anything that refers to being an otherwise reasonably healthy T1.

Unless you actually want to build up a network of other patients with various other long-term conditions of course?

Surely if they were not sure they could just do the antibody tests?

Or is it the case that after 10 years of being Type 1 there won't be any antibodies left? (because there probably won' be any beta-cells left).

Nah Mark, has to be within 6 months of diagnosis to detect GAD-65 antibodies.

The fact your DSN is unsure to what type of Diabetes you have is worrying......

You can be quite sure your Type 1...........

Are you not on the list for DAFNE?

I did wonder since I had seen written somewhere that if you are a non-standard Type 2 or that you had a non-zero GAD result (but not high enough to be confirmed as Type 1) that you should have your antibodies retested annually just in case the levels were slowly ramping up (aka LADA).

Yeah i've read all about the X-pert course on the internet plus reading posts on the forum & it'll just be a waste of my time ie 1/2 a day for 6 weeks, when i could be doing other things.

Yes i know it's very worrying but on the other hand she's new to me. I had a DSN when i was first diagnosed then when we moved areas i got another one at the GP surgery i'm at now, she was always very helpful saying that if i ever needed her she was always there for me but not that helpful in explaining things to me ie why my insulin dose had been altered. Now i've got this "new" one, she's a practice nurse but i emailed the GP surgery to ask about this & the reply was that if they labelled her a DSN then it would put people going off going to her, but i was assured & sent in the email that she has done & passed all her "stuff" to qualify her to do the diabetes. This "new" DSN has been of more help to me than the others ie introducing me to the carbs and cals book & carbs & cals (although i still need to be assured of things to do with this), introducing me to smaller 4mm needles, i've had the others for ages, & taking a big interest in my bs result print outs which i take to her.

Yes i know i'm Type 1!

I'm not on a list for a DAFNE course yet, there is none in my area :( & i don't really feel safe having to travel or stay away from my family, it would be much better if i could attend the day course then be back at home at night.

I thought I saw on Warrington hosp's website, where they say they do DAFNE? Is it a fib?

Scroll down, second from bottom ......

Hi,

Yes it does say on the website that they do DAFNE, i emailed them just before Christmas and ended up the other day with "a nurse from a local diabetes centre, who i spoke to today about the possibility of me going on an X-pert course" so i obviously didn't state properly what i wanted, so i've emailed them again today stating exactly what i want ie DAFNE & that i'm type 1 diabetic, see where i get this time!
