Type 1
Hey

I am new to this Forum. I'm a 32 year old Type 1 diabetic who has had diabetes for 14 years (since I was 18).

I was going ok until about 6 months ago and seem to be struggling a bit now with my diabetes. Health in general is ok - need to lose some weight (about a stone overweight but used to be 4.5 stone overweight so not as bad as I was!) and get healthy - my immune system seems to be very low at the mo and I cant get it back on track the way I usually used to.

Also doc has discovered 4 liver legions and a liver cyst (all benign thankfully!) so I am trying to overhaul my lifestyle, diet, fitness, everything at the moment.

Any tips from any long suffering Type One'rs out there !!!

P.S - Sorry for the moany/depressing stream of writing above 🙂

Welcome on board.............

What insulin regime are you on?

Do you test your blood sugar regularly?

:D

Welcome to the forum AliB1980 🙂

Welcome Ali

You asked for tips to overhaul your lifestyle. Some prefer small changes, others big. For activity, I think the key is to find activities you enjoy and to fit them into your life eg walking or cycling instead of going by car or public transport; dancing / gardening etc are good activities etc.

Hi Ali. Welcome 🙂

Another suggestion I would make is to get yourself a camera and set yourself challenges to visit places and improve your skills. Depending on where you are, there should be some remote areas that will require a trek so at least you'll be exercising with a purpose.

Also, how is your diet? If you have immune problems, could it be that you're lacking in some vital minerals or vitamins? Have you been tested for deficiencies ?

If you want to learn more about T1, there's a brilliant book called
"Type 1 diabetes for children, adolescents and young adults" by Ragnar Hanas.

I'd been T1 for over 30 years and still learnt plenty from it.🙂

Hi AliB

Welcome to the forum 🙂

As Rob says, the one thing about D forums is that you *never* stop learning!

Tell us a bit more about how you handle your D and any specific things you are trying to tackle and someone around here will most likely have some experiences to share which might give you food for thought.

And don't apologise about moaning... That's a big part of how the forum can help - ranting in good company 😉

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum Ali

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum, 🙂
Totally understand about you being fed up. Had two weeks of constant levels off the scale and suddenly they have gone back to normal readings.
Do you think you may be harbouring something?

Hi Ali B. As others have said you are allways learning & you have come to the right place. One of my good mates is someone who has had a heart transplant & has like you no immune system ! He rearly gets a cold because he has lemon in his tea etc. It may sound daft but little things like that help, keep at it & good luck. Duk are doing well walks all over country have a look on Duk web site (you could do a zip slide 😱) 🙂
