Hello

Despite being diagnosed over 7 years ago, I have only just become a member of Diabetes UK (7 years is a long time to be in denial for, but as I have never had any real issues, it was easier to pretend that I didn't have it!)

After having to take antibiotics three times in the space of half a year, I have suddenly realised that it is a serious disease, no matter how manageable.

I have never worn a bracelet, necklace or carried anything on me to say that I have diabetes in case of an emergency.

However, I have now realised that this is a little silly, so I have a bracelet (a nice one, so perhaps not obvious) and I have ordered a card.

I am considering ditching the bracelet in favour of a small (but VERY clear) tattoo on my wrist that can be easily seen if someone was to take my pulse, etc. Something along the lines of this, but without the blue circle - https://www.bing.com/images/search?...608026359079046382&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0

I would be very grateful for any thoughts please. I don't have any tattoos, but I am not opposed to one that could potentially save my life 🙂

Thanks

I'm uneasy about anything tattooed on a wrist, because of the memories of Nazi concentration camp survivors.
Anyway, what if there's a cure and you don't need it any more?

Hello Robin

Thanks so much for your speedy reply. Appreciate what you are saying about Holocaust survivors, I hadn't considered this.

Do you think there will be a cure in our lifetime? If there was, then the tattoo would be a badge of honour instead of an ICE reminder. Something I could be proud to have survived 🙂

They keep saying the cure is ten years away....and have been for the past 50 years at least! I like the Badge of Honour idea, though.

I know a few people who have inked for their diabetes. They range from the super-simple to half an arm of elaborate illustrated lettering and serpent/staff

I can understand why, the idea appeals to people, but I’m not sure if commemorate my diabetes that way - I generally have one or other of those medic-alert surfy bracelets.

If I went for a tattoo I think it would be for something I wanted to celebrate/remember!

Let us know what you end up doing and post a pic if you are happy to 🙂
