BALANGIR: The district that often makes headlines for starvation death and labour migration due to poverty, is fighting yet another malice. Type 1 Diabetes has stealthily taken roots in Balangir in the past few years.

Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes and juvenile diabetes, what is worrying is that it has been diagnosed in more and more younger people. Previously, the onset of diabetes was generally manifest among those above 35 who were insulin-dependent. In the past decade, Type 1 has been increasingly detected among children between 8 and 12 years.

While there is no official confirmation on the prevalence of the disease in Balangir district, unofficial sources put the affected persons at 68 including 14 children. Most of them belong to Turekela, Belpara, Muribahal, Khaprakhol, Kantabanji, Titlagarh and Patnagarh areas in the district. But according to a survey, the figure may be much higher as five to 10 Type 1 cases can be detected in each panchayat.
