Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Good morning, my name is Tony ,
I have been a Type1 diabetic since I was 4 years old , I am now 59.
As I am ageing, I am finding a few more health issues ,
Gluten intolerance,
Inaffective Thyroid ,
A compromised stomach lining ,
Joint pain.
I have a 25 year old daughter who was diagnosed with Type 1 10 years ago.
She copes admirably , so much so she had a daughter 2 1/2 years ago.
Yesterday she received an email from the NHS stating she now falls in to the Clinically Vulnerable category.
I am somewhat bemused why have heard nothing from the NHS about my condition.
I have hospitalised a few times.
30years ago , pneumonia and a collapsed lung, Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
20 years ago , Flu , Poole General Hospital.
17 years ago , Flu , Poole General Hospital.
13 years ago, perforated stomach lining , Poole General Hospital.
12 years ago , perforated stomach lining , Poole General Hospital.
Can somebody please enlighten me a little as to why I don’t appear to be in any sort of classification, I’ve never had a letter , text , email , or phone call to advise me to shield , would this be normal ???

Hi and welcome
My guess would be that your letter is also in the post. Are you in a different area to your daughter?

Hi Barbara ,
My daughter and I are both in the same postcode, and use the same consultant at Poole General Diabetes Centre.
I am on the Diabetes register , I have just spoken to the Diabetes Centre , they have said I should be flagged up , I’m awaiting a call from one of the Diabetes Nurses.
Thanks for your response , I believe that some people slip through the net !!!

I believe it isn't just diabetes and it's an add up of other things too, like age, BMI, medications etc so not EVERY Type 1 will be added to the shielding list anyway

I think as with the last sheilding letters and lists there does not seem to be much rhyme or reason with them. Some appear to have been sent letters some have had emails. I have read a few reports people who ha Gestational Diabetes but no longer either pregnant or have Diabetes have the letters.

Welcome to the forum @TNH

There was quite a bit of confusion at the start with some getting letters and others not. As @Kaylz has said Shielding decisions are based on a number of factors, with age being the most dominant factor. If you are concerned I would suggest contacting your GP.

Just listening to the radio and they are reiterating that each decision is an individual assessment. The shielding group is wider, and these people will be offered their vaccine earlier.

It would be worth contacting the DUK helpline ( 03451232399 ) who have the most recent advice.

I am wondering if some this current confusion is down to system glitches with data that predicts the risk. There was a report of a young journalist early in the week been contacted for a vaccine, when he contacted his GP his height had been wrongly inputed into the database and made his BMI high.

As you say there are anomalies, and a human might have spotted that a man being 6cm tall with a weight of 14st!! I think if people have received a letter and are concerned they will need to contact their GP. I am aware that there is a lot of discussion today around having previously had Gestational Diabetes, which is a factor that has been included, along with many others, in the individual assessments (albeit based on an algorithm)
