Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I'm in search of some advice. I'm in Germany visiting my boyfriend and I'm having a major problem with my diabetes. Since I arrived on Friday night my blood sugars have been sitting high around 16 but today it was 17.7 when I got up after being 3.2 last night. I only had a biscuit to bring my blood sugars up. I can't understand why it's so high. I had two slices of toast for breakfast which was 28g of cho so took the appropriate amount of insulin 4 units and a correction dose of 3 units and now around 3 hours since I took my insulin my blood sugars are 21! It doesn't make any sense and I can't decide if maybe my meter is just buggered :( any advice would be appreciated. Julie

Hi Julie, sorry to hear about the problems you are having :( The high on waking might be a rebound high from the hypo you had, due to your liver responding and putting out extra glucose in addition to the biscuit you had. I wonder if there is a problem with your insulin rather than your meter - how was it stored and transported over to Germany? Is there any possibility it got too warm or too cold? Might be worth trying a new cartridge (if that's what you are using). The other possibility is that you are coming down with an infection and the high levels are an early indication. Are you able to check for ketones?

Em I just carried my insulin in my hand luggage same as usual. I kinda thought that myself but the fact that it went low last night reassured me it is working. I've checked for ketones as my meter does that too but it was 0 so ok. I haven't been feeling very well but thought it was just my crazy diabetes but I guess I could be coming down with something. Hmm it's rubbish

Good news that there are no ketones 🙂 I hope that things settle for you soon and that whatever is causing it doesn't spoil your visit

Only other things to check is that your fingers don't have any traces of jam / sugar etc, which would make your blood glucose level appear higher than they really are, or is there any possibility that you forgot a long acting dose in the process of travel, or is bread sweeter / larger slices than you eat at home?

If none of those happened, then it must be one of those things with diabetes. Hope you're enjoying Germany - mulled wine, ginger cookies etc.

Welcome to the forum Julie 🙂
