I wrote a really long hello/intro then decided that like goodbyes, hellos should be short too! I am 37yrs old and have been a type 1 diabetic for about 5 years (diagnosed the hard way after nearly going DKA and in hospital for 2 weeks), I am still learning as I go...

And I am 11 weeks 5 days pregnant! I have been reading the pregnancy message boards here which have really helped when sensible advice was thin on the ground. But it seems to getting harder to cope day by day and I think I really need some more support.

Hello 🙂

Hello & welcome! 🙂 Did you pick up the advice about the huge dose folic acid via your GP? (hopefully you're on it already!) Are you on multiple injections or a pump? Diabetic pregnancy is really hard work but as you've probably seen already there are loads of us who can vouch that it can be done! Are you beibg seen by a specialist diabetic antenatal team?

Sorry, lots of questions! 😱 Try not to stress too much - everything you can do to get good control & eating healthily etc will help. Diabetes UK do a good booklet, it's a few quid I think but worth it - it details the exact recommended dose of folic acid, ideal targets for blood sugar levels etc & can be useful to go armed with to your GP when you start needing bigger prescriptions for insulin & test strips as most GPs won't have had much to do with Type 1 in pregnancy.

Anyway, many congrats on your pregnancy, I have to dash now as my little ones are wreaking havoc...role on school on monday lol! 😉

Hi Nemchenk, welcome to the forum and many congratulations on your pregnancy! 🙂 I'm not qualified to pontificate on pregnancy matters, so I'll let those that know proffer their knowledge - hope everything goes well 🙂

Thanks Twitchy 🙂

This is my second go as I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks in October. We've been trying for a while so I have been taking folic acid for ages. Started on the higher dose since last time I think. I am on Novorapid with meals and Lantus at bedtime. I was lucky enough to get on Dafne a couple of years ago and that made things a lot easier.

I am being seen by the Diabetes Nurse at the hospital regularly now and I know her quite well from when I was diagnosed. She is always telling me not too test too much (!) to relax and I think she worries about the number of hypos I have. To be honest, the hypos I don't worry about as much as the highs, which scare me, because I have always known when hypos are happening and been able to treat them myself, usually before anyone is even aware there was a problem. But now...I am worrying about the affect on the baby and can't seem to avoid them if I up the Novorapid ratio to try to reduce the after-meal spikes.

Anyway, I should probably ask this in the pregnancy message board.

Thanks Northerner! 🙂

Yep, reckon I'll go say hello in the Pregnancy bit now...

Thanks Twitchy 🙂

Hi Nemchenk,
Welcome and congrats, I am 8wks and I too am terrified of my high BG's, luckily I am on a pump and also extremely lucky as my consultants have given me CGM sensors for the first trimester, but I do still suffer with spiking and I am now taking it on that I will have to double or even triple my ratio!

AS for the DSN to say you test too much, is ludicrous! At the end of the day even if you go mad for testing, it is only during your pregnancy, it is for the benefit of your new life and especially as the bg limits are so tight that you need to know what they are! I, personally, would carry on testing as much as I want or need to...it is you that is looking after this baby and you don't want to cause problems because you didn't know you were high!

Good luck with your new project, I am not expecting an easy ride with this and the diabetes to top but I have the confidence that I can do this! :D

Hi hyper-Suze,

Congratulations to you too! Wish I had a pump but seems unlikely I'll get a chance of one of those. CGM sensors sounds really hi-tech! Is it good?

I totally agree, the testing is critical right now, how can I know what to inject if I don't know where I am? I am still testing before meals as well as 1.5 hrs after. Had a funny moment when Midwife asked me whether I was 'allowed to use Dafne'?! - I would really love to know what she would propose instead. Eat the exact same items every day, do the exact same activities every day and have doses set by nurses? I just can't imagine...Anyway, I am getting used to ignoring certain attitudes. Like you say, I am the one responsible for looking after this baby.

Hope all goes well for you, see you in the pregnancy forum!
