While genetics studies have identified mutations that increase the risk of developing type 1 diabetes, the gene pool alone cannot fully explain who is susceptible to the disease

“While there are several studies indicating associations between gut microbes and type 1 diabetes onset, to our knowledge, we discovered the first bacterium that can enhance type 1 diabetes,” said Altindis. “Taken together with our analysis of the available gut microbiota data from children developing type 1 diabetes, we are one step closer to understanding the potential link between gut microbiome—in particular the microbe Parabacteriodes distasonis—and this complex autoimmune disease.”

Thanks for that @Amity Island I believe Type 1 is very closely linked to the gut. There have been so many studies. I believe there was even one that suggested a transplant of gut microbes as a potential cure. If only it was that easy *large sigh* (having a bad day with the tedious old D)

Pure, white and deadly @Amity Island ? It could be, but I suspect something more alien, so to speak, eg cows’ milk or wheat or a virus. I would imagine that it’s a staged process - ie a number of things have to happen to trigger Type 1.
