Hi, I was diagnosed 14 years ago. Routine hernia operation triggered it off would you believe. I certainly didn't at the time.

I've been muddling along kidding myself really. Hba1c wasn't too bad for quite a while, but guess I took my eye off the ball and it has slowly been creeping up over the last 3-4 years.

But now I am motivated again, I am hopefully in the process of going onto a pump which I am hoping will be good for me.

From what I have heard from the hospital and what I have seen on here, it all sounds really positive.

Hi shanko, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that you are making positive steps to get things on track 🙂 What insulin are you currently using? Any timetable for when you might get a pump?

Hi, Levimer and humbling.

Not long had an evening talk at the hospital with the pump manufacturers and a couple of people already using the pump.

Got an appointment in a couple of weeks for pump assessment, but from what I understand from the hospital, I fulfil the criteria.

Then I think the hospital have to apply for funding.

I have no idea how long all this takes. Hopefully not too long, however I feel that red tape will take time.

Does any else know how long these things take to get the wheels in motion.

Hi Shanko, welcome. Predictive text is amusing sometimes isn't it? When I saw your thread title I thought it meant you were 14 at first, not that you were 14 years in. It's good you're getting back on track, well done, and may get a pump. There are plenty pumpers in here and I'm sure they'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

I know it takes ages for some people , but my consultant applied for funding in late March and I was pumping merrily in May! So it can happen quite fast🙂

Wow, it would be good if that was the case all round.

I won't build my hopes up too much. Let's just see what happens.

The NHS do get it right occasionally but I wouldn't advise holding your breath!😛

Welcome to the forum shanko 🙂

Hello shanko and welcome 🙂

Have you been on a carb counting course such as DAFNE as I know a lot of the hospital pump clinics require you to go on such a course if you haven't already done so before starting a pump. I started using a pump in 1999 and it is the best thing I've done for my control but I can't remember how long it took to get funding back then! Good luck I hope the pump assessment appointment goes well🙂

Hi, yes I did dafne about 5 years ago. I have good carb counting.

My issue is I work nghts so I have different patterns during the week and the weekends.

My weekends can be all over the place.

Hi Shanko and LOL - I'd interpreted Humalog - we get used to having to do it on forums and don't notice we've had to do it now, half the time!

Took a couple of months for mine, then as someone was on sick leave there was a delay at my clinic - so it took FIVE months in the end!

We'd delayed booking our holiday - since I wanted a couple of months at home getting used to it and near the clinic before leaving the country - but we decided we'd just book it, no sooner we had then they sent the appointment! So in the finish I was away only about 6 weeks after I got it. We worked on the basis that spares are available worldwide, they all have a pump helpline at all hours of the day and night every day of the year, so what the hell? It was fine! - though of course, I did tend to talk about what I was doing and what I was thinking more with my husband than I ever had done before. Cos he was there! LOL And he did stop me doing a few things which could have been a bit not exactly bag on, by querying whether I thought this would work to do 'that' ?

Good things are worth waiting for, eh?

Hi, i can't believe i've been diagnosed for the past 14 years and have never taken advantage of this great resource.

It is very warming to see how welcoming so many people are, and it is nice to be able to talk to people who are experiencing the same things that you are.

I still regard myself as quite a newbie to diabetes when you look at how long other people have had it.

The way i look at it is, there are lot more worse things out there that i could have and if i can manage this properly, it shouldn't need to make my life too bad.

I have a saying. "control the condition, don't let it control you."

Medical advances are coming every day, so if i have to wait another couple of months, then as you say good things are worth waiting for.
