Two thirds of British workers fear they will be physically unable to work into their late sixties, according to a survey which found that six in ten are not doing enough exercise to stay fit.

The retirement age is due to rise to 66 for both sexes by 2020 and to 67 eight years later, but workers claim that by that age they will no longer be up to the job.

Sixty per cent of those surveyed were worried they would be too tired to continue full working hours, and 65 per cent feared that illness could prevent them doing their job.

The questionnaire, issued by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, also found that 69 per cent said they were not getting an average of two and a half hours' exercise per week ? the minimum amount recommended in official health guidelines.

The survey of 2,041 adults also found that 30 per cent of 18-24 year olds and 28 per cent of those aged 25 to 34 expected to work into their seventies before they could retire.
