I was wondering if a type 2 is eventually prescribed insulin, are they technically then a type 1? Also, when is the best time to exercise? I would imagine after eating but I prefer before as I get sleepy after a meal.

Any help appreciated.

If a type 2 is on insulin, then that is what they are. You can't become a type 1 from being a type 2. It just means you're a type 2 treated with insulin. Being a type 1 you have an autoimmune disease that has killed off your beta cells. Being a type 2 you have insulin resistance and your pancreas can start to produce less and less insulin, but it isn't being attacked by the bodies immune system.

For best time to exercise, I would suppose it depends on how your diabetes is treated.

Thank you. Yes, it's obvious now you have pointed that out. Silly me!

It's worth knowing, Jill that the effects of exercise can last up to 48 hours! So if you did an hours energetic vacuuming this morning, the beneficial effects will last until Saturday. Or to put it another way, don't do all yer housework the same day cos it's not good for yer health. That's what I tell my husband anyway .......

I prefer to exercise before a meal or at least 2 hours after a meal because I find that my blood sugars drop too quickly if I exercise after eating, it also makes me feel rather unwell. This is due to the effect of the insulin profile.

That's really interesting to know trophywench and thanks for the information. I sort of imagined that once I'd eaten a meal I needed to dash around madly to lower the blood glucose. I'm diet and exercise controlled (or not!) at present and the pressure of regularly exercising and wondering how much is enough was getting a bit tiresome so knowing I have 48 hours benefit is reassuring.

I will also add my mate Alison regularly goes hypo when doing the ironing.

That is the BEST reason I have ever heard to leave it in peace, safely in the basket!!

There is no doubt that a nice brisk walk after tea will reduce your BG but you certainly shouldn't stress too much if you can't fit it in - stress just increases your BG anyway!

Ironing UGH! Seriously though, thanks again for advice. I browse many diabetes websites for information but invariably find the best advice on here.
