Yes, it was the same for me, although thankfully, I was not as ill as you Northerner. Did have some ups and downs during the first year, but I was thinking the other day - I was getting obsessed with my health because I didn't know what was wrong, had turned 50 and thought 'it's all down hill now'. Now I am still a bit obsessed, but in a much more positive way, feeling fitter and better and thinking 'to hell with 50+ I can do anything if I really want to - look at all those 60+ marathon runners!
Beards - doh! I'm always dropping myself in it for the gags!
By the way haven't seen any of your poetry, but sounds good.
I was 49 and had had my first tooth taken out that year, plus started needing glasses occasionally for reading, so thought it was just age. I think this is one of the big problems, particularly with type 2s, but also slow-onset type 1s, that you are at an age where everyone tells you you should expect to feel 'past your prime'. But actually, now I'm being treated, I am as fitr and healthy as when I was 35!
