I am prediabetic. I have lost twentyfourlbs since Christmas with another twenty to go. I have used the Atkins Diet my doctor is happy with diet and the result.
I read this article in a Blue Heron newsletter I have no views except that it does make some sort of sense, since the Atkins diet helps diabetics, because of low carbs.

Reducing calories as part of a dieting bout is common fare for
type 2 diabetics. However, a new research study conducted by
scientists at the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre found that
a short-term intervention of extreme calorie cutting can improve
symptoms of type 2 diabetes dramatically.

The study assigned a group of long-standing type 2 diabetics to a
very low calorie liquid diet that consisted of only 600 calories
per day for 7-days. Remarkably, blood sugar levels returned to
normal by the end of the 7-day bout. The researchers note that
the mini-fast allows the pancreas and liver to clear out excess
accumulated fat ?which pushes the reset button on carbohydrate
metabolism.

He Trumpetwaller and welcome in.

We had a debate about this research when it was reported a month or so ago and agreed it would be a very dangerous thing to do, even under medical supervision. I personally have some serious reservations about it's long term effectiveness too. It will be interesting to hear how the 'guinea-pigs' are doing in a few years time.

Hi Trumpetwaller, welcome to the forum 🙂 Well done on your weight loss so far, sounds like you are well on your way to achieving your goal!

The study you quote was discussed widely here. Whilst its findings were of some interest, the possibilities were hugely over-exaggerated. The study was tiny and there is not really sufficient data (either from the study or following up on the participants) to pronounce it as a viable course of action - for example, we don't know if the symptoms returned after the participants had returned to normal eating a year later, plus it didn't work for all of them. The diet itself can only be followed under very close medical supervision.

Low-carbing, on the other hand, is a perfectly accessible and sensible course of action for many people - fewer carbs means less stress on the pancreas and improved blood sugar levels, simple logic really! As with any diet, especially if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, it needs to be something you can adhere to, so a diet that you find difficult to follow won't be effective long term.

As we have suggested to another new pre-diabetic member today, it would be a good idea to look at our Useful links thread, under the Type 2 and General sections for some good pointers to information you may find helpful. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help you out 🙂
