More than 175,000 persons in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) are affected with diabetes, that is, one in five persons, which is the highest number of affected persons in the Western Hemisphere, stated Nigel Matthew, president of the Eastern Credit Union.

Matthew made the statement yesterday morning at the launch of the credit union?s Diabetes Awareness Activities 2012 at the La Joya Facility in St Joseph. He also noted that TT is ranked fifth in the world percentage-wise.

In a Newsday interview on Tuesday, Carlton Phillip, president of the Diabetes Association of TT, said one out of seven persons had the disease and predicted the figure could reach to one out of four persons by 2025, which is closer to the statistic quoted by Matthew.
