Hellooo,

I was just researching and wondered what triggers everyone has when their BGs are high?

I am currently have a stretch of High BG levels but can't seem to find or place what could be causing it, this isn't the first time I have had high BG levels and the doctors can't seem to understand why they are high so they have higher the insulin last year in December. I have done the DAFNE course and I am following the carb counting and making sure it is right however somedays it could be one or two grams out. I take my background insulin (Levemir) at the same time every morning and night but my meals are always at different times? Could that be a factor of the high sugar levels?

Everything just seems to go okay for a while and then drastically wrong and it is very stressful for me. I'm hoping there is someone who can help?

Thank you in advance 🙂

Hi. Sorry to hear your having problems, people with more experienced than me will be along soon.
In my experience anything including the weather can affect BGs😡
Have you done a basal test recently, If not it would be a good idea.
Would you like info on basal testing?

Hi sorry your having to go through the pain of high BG not good, I find stress illness and the weather can all effect it.

Oops meant to say. Imo MDI is ideal for those of us who don't eat at set times.

I haven't done a basal test since December last year after coming out of hospital because of high BG's which really helped to get a set amount of units for the time being. I'm assuming I would higher the level of my levemir than lowering it?

I thought it could be stress or the weather or maybe even my carb counting/ratio needs sorting but over the past couple of months my BGs have been all over the place, sometimes the days even weeks can be amazing but then the next couple of weeks something goes wrong.

In December the Diabetic Consultant put me on Metformin as they used the reason that I could be slightly resisting the insulin I take, would that have an affect?

Are your levels fluctuating much , how long has it been happening this time.
When I was put on Metfartin :D years ago, I was told it would help make me more sensitive to my own insulin, so I assume it does the same with what' we inject.
Yes literally anything can affect our BGs, including it seems the wind changing direction 😱 , fun isn't it 😱:D
If you decide to make some changes, its best to do one thing at a time else you won't know what's worked. TBH I'd start with a basal test first.

I'm sorry you're having this trouble. I'm under the impression anything can affect our BGs. :(

Stress is one of the main culprits. Problem is if you're like me - having high BGs gives me stress which is far worse if I can't fathom out WHY. In other words - a vicious circle!

So - you've got to breach the circle yourself having divided the elephant up into bite-sized pieces. Basal testing is always an EXCELLENT place to start.

Tell us - do you take Levemir twice a day - or only once? - most of us T1s do far better on a split dose, but not necessarily (or even frequently) evenly spaced or equal ones! (cos Lev was always designed to be taken twice a day)

Yeah, my levels never really stay in line unless I have been signed off work or if I'm not at work. University doesn't have an affect on my levels but I've noticed work has but I am trying to leave my current workplace at the moment due to problems with the manger and employees.

I was put on metformin for trying to make me more sensitive with the insulin I was injecting into my body but it works somedays and doesn't work on others.

I'm going to do a basal test to beginning with, I have also called the Diabetic Nurse team at the hospital to see what they suggest but I am still awaiting a call back

Its probably all the stress that is making my BGs worse than they are, yesterday the lowest BG I had was 13, which I think is still quite high, but yes I am going to do a basal test just to see if that needs readjusting but I have also been in contact with my Diabetic Nurse team at the hospital to see what they suggest but I am waiting for a call back.

I take my levemir twice a day, 22 units in the morning and 20 units in the evening

I know a couple of people on Metformin (T1s I mean) who find it doesn't address their resistance until they ramp it up to an appropriate level for them to actually do anything - so, are you on a large enough dose of Met ?

What dosage of metformin are you on?? I was put on metformin a year ago....At a pretty high dose (i think) 1000mg in morning and 500mg lunch and dinner!
