Trigger finger

I had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand last week and also need it on the left hand when the right one has healed.

My palm and index finger on my left hand have been painful for the past few weeks and yesterday I woke up with my index finger bent at right angles unable to get it to straighten. In the end after lots of rubbing my index finger did release but every time I bend it it is getting stuck and it hurts!

I know it's trigger finger and is linked to carpal tunnel and diabetes and I presume it will need releasing surgically when that hand has carpal tunnel release. Has anyone else had this and is there any chance it might just go away?🙄 It's my 'good' hand at present and things are getting a bit tricky needing crutches as well! 😱

I can't advise on that, I'm afraid but I'm glad you finally got surgery on your right hand! Did they give you a timescale for it to heal? I really hope it brings you some much needed relief! God knows you deserve it ((hugs))

Thanks Rosie🙂 the surgery has given me so much relief from the pain down my arm now the nerve isn't being squashed! I'm having the stitches out in 2 weeks and hope it carries on improving. I'm just a bit flummoxed with my other finger getting so stuck

They should be able to fix both at the same time, Flower. You know it's all made worse by using crutches. It's like a line of dominoes, but don't worry, the finger is where the dominoes stop. The trigger finger won't go away on its own, but if you use some Voltarol Gel on the lowest joint, that will cut down any inflammation, and it won't hurt so much.🙂

Thanks Mike, needing crutches for 20 years has certainly compounded the situation with my hands if not caused it in the first place! I'll rub some Voltarol on the joint and hope for the best 🙂

Hi Flower. Glad the carpel tunnel is done but sorry to hear about your trigger finger. I had trigger thumb a few weeks ago. It was stuck straight and I couldn't bend it. Very painful too. I had a cortisone injection at GP and 2 weeks later it was back to normal. Maybe you could ask if that can be done for you? Failing that there is a small op to release it. Must be a nightmare for you. Hope you soon start to get improvements all round.

I'm nervous of steroid injections after a few blood sugar battles with previous ones, I think I'll try and cope with it until I go back to the orthopaedic clinic.

My commiserations on the trigger finger @Flower I went to the gatekeeper with one @ end of August. Took almost 2 months before she would refer me on to the AP nurse to get it seen to! Finally being seen in December! Dems GPs dont do F- all these days , Just pass you onto the nurses!

Too true, Flower, when my hip was injected with steroids, that night I was battling levels around 18 or 20, and had to increase my basal by 20% for three weeks.

Well, hand update, I had the stitches out of my carpal tunnel right hand today and I'm on the list for carpal tunnel on left and two trigger finger releases as both my index finger and now my ring finger are bent at right angles and rather painful 😱

I'm text book for all the predisposing factors for trigger finger, long duration of diabetes - tick, long term repetitive gripping - tick -needed crutches for 20 years, female - tick, over 50 - just about tick. Ahh diabetes you really are too generous with your wealth of complications 🙄 😡

Doctors always try to reassure that steroid injections 'are contained' at the point of injection 🙄 but I found my levels temporarily shot up after one into my shoulder.

The last steroid injection I had put me in hospital with really high bg and ketones so thankfully I was offered surgery to release my stupid bent fingers at the same time as the carpal tunnel surgery and not injections, phew!
