I just think there are so many variables for example on days I have finance reviews which are stressful I need more . Maybe it’s my age but I prefer to rely on my brain and common sense not turn to an app
Well, sorry, but that's no reason to condemn those who do.

My attitude to a bolus advisor is as it says on the tin - it's "advice". When you have 3 different ratios for different times of day, your mealtimes are unpredictable, and you actually have a lot more going on in your life than diabetes, it's good to have something to do the math!

Thanks @JJay! I've been using / relying on a bolus 'adviser' since 2013 after going on the X-pert insulin course - we were all introduced to the accu-chek expert meter.......

00:06 - 7.6 - bedtime - bgl in target range - 15 minute hypo check - had 26g of carbs which was 2 bags of mini cheddars - was going to have 1 bag but couldn't resist having just 1 more - no bolus.

Sunday 11/7
07:09am - 6.2 for me this morning - bgl in target range but unusual because I'm often in the 4s on waking - 16u of tresiba taken

I’m not condemning anyone at all .. what I’m saying is I prefer to control my diabetes in a different way . I have a very stressful busy life as well but still choose to go with my feeling rather than using an app .

@Freddie1966 maybe yours is the best way - I've just started a thread 'how do you work out your sums yourself'.......

There aren’t 'best ways' Gill, just 'different ways' all equally valid, it’s what suits you best.
I agree I was just trying to say there are alternatives. I just find it so fickle I like to include other things in my calcs for example how lively are the puppies do they need a long walk / short walk . Things like this example change every day , timing of walks etc based on what calls my husband and I have . My ratio at lunchtime for example is 1:40 if the puppies need along walk

Oh I agree, and I'm on the 'intuitive' spectrum with tweaks for planned or previous activity etc, (but only after an initial period of working it all out on paper and keeping records), and that's what works for me.

Appreciated, and maybe I was a little oversensitive late in the evening!

I'm just concerned that sometimes those who are managing well can, unintentionally I'm sure, come over as quite intimidating to people who are less confident. My attitude to diabetes technology is - if it helps, go for it!

I'm very intuitive now too. The Libre makes that much easier and safer as you can check to see how things are panning out and adjust one way or another if necessary. Without the Libre I could not be so "freestyle" with my insulin regime.

This morning for instance I woke up too early on 10.1, shot myself 3.5 units because my graph clearly showed my levels were rising although arrow was horizontal and I knew I would be getting up in an hour or two. Roughly 2 of those correction units were to bring me down to about 6 and 1.5 for DP/FOTF when I got up. I wasn't set on what or when I would have breakfast this morning so didn't bolus for that and I still haven't had any breakfast but I woke up 2 hours after my correction on 5.8 and 3 hours later my reading is 6.0 and has remained lovely and level throughout that time so my 3.5 units worked out perfectly but there was no real formula to work it out, just what I felt was appropriate this morning given what my Libre showed me had gone on last night.

I absolutely wouldn't have the confidence to do this without Libre. Following a low carb diet also means I have to take protein into consideration with my insulin use and I would really struggle to quantify my protein in terms of carbs for a bolus calculator to work it out so I cannot imagine even trying to use one.

Think I’m just old … I prefer to use technology as little as possible. I work with figures so to me it’s easy to see patterns in nos , we all have different strengths and weaknesses. I was just offering an alternative view that’s all . Our individual personalities come into the equation as well . Some are more laid back about things than others, some more obsessive. I for example don’t like being told what to do never have which is probably why I don’t want to use technology

Dont knock tech Fred, diabetes control in general has progressed enormously thanks to pumps cgm apps, makes life with condition so much easier.

I’m not knocking it , just saying not for me . I am type 1 with a latest hba1c of 35 . Just saying for me it can’t give me a better result than I get from doing things without it . I have asked to be deleted from this forum , i would like to thank whoever posted the picture of injection site ideas relating to speed of absorption that has made a terrific difference to me . I’ve been very upset by a few posts , and feel that I just don’t want this upset in my life . I have a very busy stressful life , don’t need to add to the stress

@Freddie1966 obviously it's up to you if you want to be deleted from the forum but have a good think about it first. We're all here to try and help each other. Some people are good with technology some aren't - I'm no good with it as you can probably tell. Your latest HbA1c is excellent!

No need to leave my friend, we all have different views on diabetes & every other aspect of life, be c**p world if we just followed others like sheep.

I’m very sorry to read this. I hope nothing I’ve said has implied criticism of those who work things out for themselves - far from it, I’m full of admiration! But I will freely admit I haven’t got the patience.

It just proves that we’re all different, and therefore we can all learn from each other. I do hope you will reconsider.

@Freddie1966 Wise words above from @nonethewiser ^^^ Remember too that the written word doesn’t always show a person’s tone. Perhaps we’re feeling a bit rubbish and read things as criticism when they were just comments, or perhaps we’re tired and reply rather tersely to people and then that’s taken the wrong way. So many possibilities for misunderstanding.

With regard to this discussion, you’re me basically. Our HbA1Cs are the same and I too am not a fan of advisors whether they’re meters or pumps. I do my own calculations for everything and judge by ‘feel’. Part of the reason is I don’t have time to input c**p into something that’s not guaranteed to give me the right answer. Either it tells me what I would have done anyway - so I wasted my time, or it tells me something wrong to do - so, I wasted my time again.

However, we’re all different. Each method is valid and our individual choices are valid too. It’s us who have to live with this tedious condition, so it’s us who should make the choices for ourselves.

Please reconsider. I like reading your posts here and have always found you helpful and balanced. XX
