Treating Hypos

For the past few days I have been having trouble treating hypos in my usual way. This has resulted in my BG being below 4 for 1-1.5 hrs each time then going sky high later on. I usually treat with lucozade but it doesn't seem to be having any affect and I can't understand why? I don't like sweets so can't treat that way. I have had to result in glucose sachets and gluco juice but they are a very expensive way to treat hypos.
 
How strange! Does the glucojuice work OK then, but not the lucozade? :confused: I was going to suggest that it might be a problem with the treatments getting through to your bloodstream because of slow stomach emptying, but if one works and not the other it doesn't sound like it's that. I know that some treatments don't seem to work for some people, but surprised that a trusted remedy would suddenly stop working?

Do you have hypostop (I think it's not been name changed) on repeat?

I've used it before but I struggle to swallow it & prefer lucozade but it does the trick without repeating treatment

The glucojuice worked but not quickly, the sachets of glucose worked a lot quicker. This has happened to me 3 times now so it's definitely something to do with the lucozade. I do have slow stomach emptying and take medication for it so I guess it could be that playing up. Maybe liquid isn't the way to go to treat it for me anymore.

I do have it on repeat, yes, I struggle to swallow it too though, vile stuff. The glucose sachets are pretty much the same thing but flavoured, lime or berry, cost ?1.50 per sachet though!

Where do you buy the sachets from? They sound good
 
Have you tried Dextrosol tablets? They seem to do the trick for me. You do need quite a few though. They cost about 60p for a pack which does about 3 treatments so a bit cheaper than the sachets. Poundland sell them for a bit less.

I'm sure you can buy glucose powder in packets as well but it's not all that convenient for carrying round.

You have to admit it though, whoever managed to make nearly pure sugar taste like toilet cleaner has to be some kind of twisted genius!! :D🙄

But it seems to be paramedics first choice of torture even when you are nearly passed out
 
I have discovered that M & S Jelly Belly Super Sour Jelly Beans work well for me. Can't stand glucose tablets. I wonder whether the Dr Oetker Liquid Glucose that is cheap and available for cookery purposes would be more palatable than glucose tablets.
 
I was given some Hypofit by a DSN once - they're not bad, mint and orange flavours, but no idea what they cost. Never tried Hypostop, and doubt I ever will having read such poor reviews of it! 😱
 
Haha! Luckily I've only had to have it once, self administered...my fav hypo tipple is coke, i need the caffeine after a hypo! :D

When I was first given it I got told to watch out for vomitting as my nurse said some diabetics are sick afterwards.
My dentist insists on using it on me then letting me drink my lucozade
 
Newbs, if you are having problems with treating a low like that then have a look at your basal.
I know if I have to use a lot of glucose to treat a hypo then it's far to much basal causing the problem.
 
I was just about to say like Sue that it may not be the lucozade that's not working any more it may be that either your basal or your bolus is pushing you further down even as you are taking the lucozade.

I have had the odd hypo where I've almost been fighting a losing battle against the insulin. I've had to continue treating for some time on those occasions. I have always won in the end but it's been difficult.

I buy the sachets from Boots. They are useful, and quite tough for keeping in your bag 🙂
 
I've had a chat with my DSN today and we've looked at everything and it seems that Northerner's first reply was correct, it's down to the gastroparesis, the liquid is simply sitting in my stomach and doing nothing. I have a lot to learn about gastroparesis it seems, haven't been told anything about it other than to take the pills. I have bought some fruit jelly sweets today and will try to go with that and always have glucotabs on me, see how it responds. HbA1c gone up again too, 7.3 now.

All-in-all I feel a bit down about everything at the moment, it's like fighting a losing battle.
 
Newbs, with all that's going on and all the strain you're under I'd say a slight rise in your HbA is nothing to worry about. So don't beat yourself up over it.
