We have a holiday booked in northern Italy (Lake Como) in mid May. I am concerned, as someone with type 1, about travelling to the area. I am aged 66. What do other people think? I don't know if I would get my money back through my travel insurance if I decide not to go? Thanks.

may is still a long time to go,i would not worry now.
review the situation in 2 weeks time,by then it will be a clearer if things are getting better or worse in Europe .

On the subject of insurance cover, the media message seems to be that you need to check the small print in your insurance on the off chance you might be covered, but don't raise your hopes. Travel insurance will normally only pay up if the government puts up a top-level warning against travelling to a region, and that is unlikely to happen in this case.

I wouldn’t make any decisions until much nearer the time. There will be more understanding of the disease profile by then and where any hot spots are.

If you do go, make sure to take more than double the insulin you might need, just in case you do get holed up somewhere in quarantine, but I think it is too early to make a decision at the moment unless your full balance is due any time soon.

Sorry to hear the outbreak is casting a shadow over your travel plans @Scotsbluebelle

DUK have released this statement which might fill in some bits of information - https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/coronavirus-type-1-diabetic.85368/#post-953527

It certainly does seem to be a situation which is evolving and developing rapidly. Recent experiences of holiday operators going under (Thomas Cook etc) have suggested that holiday insurance can be a bit of a minefield, but hopefully you would be covered if the situation worsens nearer the time. Of course, if you‘ve not paid the balance yet, you may have a much tricker decision to take.

I guess it would depend on how you felt about going on the trip, and whether you thought you would enjoy it, or be too worried.
