Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I went back to work this week and have been asked to go on a training session in holland and then possibly a trip to Madrid next month.

I was diagnosed with type 1 just over a week ago and scared about going on these trips because it means sleeping in my hotel room on my own and I am just getting used to taking insulin. I have not has a hypo before but scared if it happens when I am asleep that no one will be there to help me.

Also, I know people will want to go out for meals and drinks after and I have never faced the social stigma of not joining in with a few alcoholic drinks during these evenings. Is it best just to be open and honest and not drink at all

Like many people, I've never needed any help from anyone because of hypoglycaemia, and have travelled a lot, including a solo trip to visit an uncle & aunt in France a few weeks after starting insulin. So, you should be fine.

The key is to test blood glucose before bed and have meter and sweets within reach.

No need to avoid alcohol - just eat before and while drinking, drink in moderation, beer & wine are generally easier to manage than spirits, test blood glucose before sleeping, eat then if needed.
