Hello 🙂

I am going to the Cologne Xmas Markets in December 🙂D ) and will need travel insurance. Does anyone know of a diabetes friendly company that are good value for money?

went to Cologne Xmas markets a few years ago. Wrap up warm it was really cold.

The markets were lovely the ones in the UK just don't seem to have the same atmosphere.

We lived in Cologne for 3 years when my late father was in the RAF. I was only 6 weeks old when we left these shores so no memories of the city until we went back for the markets. My mum announced in the large Dept store she used to wheel me in there in my pram!! I was in my late forties when we went!

We have just got back from a weekend trip to Bruges & used Insure & go as they seemed to give us a reasonable quote. My hubby has a couple of issues health wise & my diabetes. Diabetes was covered as standard, we had to pay a bit extra (?30 covered both of us) to cover hubbies irregular heart issues as he is about to have some treatment to hopefully sort it.

I got a quote from Staysure but they added a premium of over ?100 for a weekend break I don't think so.

Hope you enjoy the trip, each market if you haven't been before have their own mulled wine; lovely just the thing to warm your cockels as you walk around.

Try this

I used the link on DiabetesUK website and got two week's European cover for ?27. And as we'll as being T1' I also have heart disease so thought this a very good deal.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Love your story about you in your pram - my dad was in the army and we did go to Germany, but not Cologne.
Hope your hubbies treatment works out well 🙂

Hi Maryanne, thank you, i will try the websit and see how i get on.🙂

We have found Insureandgo to be very good, and have used them for a few years for European trips. When I declared diabetes to them they updated our policy at no extra cost.

Have a lovely Christmassy time!

Thanks Pine Marten, that's 2 suggestions for Insure and Go, will definitely contact them. I have had some laser surgery a few years back so don't know if that will affect the price.

I'm really looking forward to going, hoping its going to be real Xmassy and magical!

Some friends of mine recommended InsureAndGo to me a while back (before diagnosis), said they were very good when it came to settling claims. Given some of my experiences trying to squeeze money out of companies for perfectly valid claims, it counts for a lot 🙂

Just look on Moneysupermarket and specify you have pre-existing conditions, I got a pan-euro policy for one year for a couple with pre-existings for ?50 total.

I am going to try Insureandgo when my annual insurance runs out, the company I am with at the moment do my head in everytime I have to update them with something they say I am not covered. I asked about the diabetes and they said I am cover for type 2 but if I take medication I won't be covered until they know that I have no side effects from them the same with my husbands high blood pressure tablets, I asked why do we have insurance when the conditions aren't pre-existing and then they put blocks up all over don't go with a company called voyager they are not illness friendly.

Oh dear, Helenp479 - this is part of the email I got from Insureandgo when I told them about taking medication for diabetes:

'We acknowledge receipt of your email declaring new medical conditions on your policy. New medical diagnosed after purchase will be covered with no extra charge, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy (e.g. in the event of a claim, your GP will confirm that you were fit to travel). This applies to any new medical condition diagnosed after purchase but declared to us before travel. We have updated the information on your policy to this effect.'

We've never had any problems with them (though we've not had to make a claim ever) so I would give them a try certainly. Good luck!

Thanks Pine Marten I will def be getting a quote from insureandgo I did tell my insurance company that I will be parting company with them in feb when my annual policy runs out, I have used them for years and paid a small fortune out and never claimed.

Since you are going to Europe it might be worth looking up what EHICplus costs . They do have a medical screening but I have heard they are reasonably priced; you have to have your EHIC with you because it covers the difference.

France only
If you have lots of pre existing conditions and/or are very old then it's nearly impossible to get any cover. My father is 84, has had a heart valve replacement, has atrial fibrillation and that's just the start. Even specialist companies decline him.
Fortunately there is an answer that works well for us but unfortunately only works for France. One firm Exclusive Healthcare operates as a temporary French Top up insurance with repatriation insurance on top. ie it will pay the difference between what is covered by French Healthcare under the EHIC and the cost of treatment plus things like in patient board and lodging costs. There isn't any theft or loss element but it does cover repatriation. Because it operates under French law for top up insurance, it can only vary cost according to age and can't ask about pre-existing conditions or take them into account. They offer insurance by the day.

Thanks Helen, i do have an EHIC card but didn't realise you could get a 'plus' service - will look into it 🙂

I have never heard of this before very useful information will have a look at this myself.
