Hi, I live in Spain and 2 years ago my gp changed my insulin from Lantus and novorapid, to Toujeo. Has anyone who has tried this insulin had any side affects? Since starting I have had frequent cold like symptoms and this year am experiencing shortness of breath. I have had an xray and an ecg which showed nothing untoward and an wondering if it could be a side affect of the insulin ( which is listed). Since being on this new insulin my hba1c have not improed.

Simple solution is to change your basal and see if things improve, if they do then you know it's the T you are using.

Just realised you are a new member so welcome to the forum.

I don’t know what other basals are available to you in Spain. As @Pumper_Sue says, the obvious answer is to try a different one and see if the symptoms disappear. One of our regular members, @Michael12421 who lives in Spain was swapped from Lantus to Toujeo as he said Lantus was no longer available there.

Michael, how are you getting on with Toujeo?

Hello, welcome to the forum.
I was changed to Toujeo some years ago by my doctor as Lantus was being withdrawn by Sanofi, it was a cost decision I was told.
My main problem with Toujeo was that it could not be split into 2 doses as Lantus could. This gave me some problems at first and I did have some trouble. I was told by my doctor that I must use the same dose as I did Lantus, 18 units, but I split Lantus into 2 x 9 units. I had problems so I telephoned Sanofi in Barcelona who confirmed that I could not split it. After a while things were obviously not right and so I reduced gradually to 15 units taken in the evening. I have now changed to taking it in the morning with very good results - so far - but this morning I reduced it to 14 units as I have been having low readings in the mornings. I'll know tomorrow morning if that decision was the right one, or maybe the day after.
I also learned, quite recently that whilst Toujeo must be kept in the 'fridge before it is used once you do start a new pen it must not be put back in the 'fridge but kept at room temperature. As far as the cold-like symptons are concerned I too have had, and continue to have, much sneezing and nose-blowing first thing in the morning. May I ask which Province you live in?

Hi @Jan H. 🙂 I got switched to Tresiba (in 2015 ish) when I was living in Spain. My Spanish endo said Levemir was available too, but I didn’t fancy the extra daily injection. I didn’t opt for Toujeo because as far as I could see (reading about it online) it was just Lantus with a new name! Lantus was the pits, for me anyway.:D

Hi Michael, I live in Almeria province. Looking back at my blood testing records I have listed cough and cold like symptoms a lot since starting on Toujeo, also shortness oF breth. The only way I am going to see if it is this insulin is to try another. Am hoping my Gp will sympathise, but they aren't experts in this field, unfortunately.

Best friend has had a house at Retamar since the mid 1970s.

Good morning. You are within the Junta de Andalucia and the health authority are quite strict with their policies. Having said that I can see no reasonable excuse for them not to change your basal if Toujeo is not suiting you, after all the health of their patients should take priority over policies. I do hope that you have have a successful outcome with your GP visit. Please let us know how you get on. Buena suerte.

Hi Bloden, I hope my Gp will let me try tresiba, I have done a bit of homework and a fellow diabetiv in the UK has recommended it.

Fingers crossed you can get your insulin switched over without too much hassle!
